Your Presentation Is the Ugly Baby There's an old Seinfeld episode where Jerry and Elaine struggle with their friends' baby being ugly. Their friends think their baby is adorable. Of course--it's their BABY. They viewed it with bias and love and affection, but it was objectively unattractive. This is about perspective. When one is too close to something--when it's their life, their livelihood, their expertise--it is hard to view it objectively. It's tough to see that your presentation baby is ugly. The audience, an overwhelming majority of the time, will come at your presentation with a different view--being on the outside of it--than you have on the inside. Here are things to consider when crafting your presentation to make sure your baby isn't ugly and keep the audience in mind: The audience doesn't share your perspective: Where you may see the beautiful poetry of the R&D story of your product, your audience may see unnecessary background that won't help them sell. When you are convinced that everyone absolutely must know the last 20 years of sales data for your niche silo, your audience may struggle with seeing the relevance (but succeed at seeing the inside of their eyelids). Consider your audience first and then think about how you fit into their needs. Filter what's "nice to know" versus what they "need to know": You have limited real estate in your audiences' brains. Use it wisely. Your audience will not be able to take in your 10-point-plan-for-success. They will maaaaaybe remember 3-5 points. But are those 3 points going to be the most important? How do you make sure the most critical things are remembered? Hone your message down to the truly important--the need-to-know--and include ways the audience can find additional information and detail as their curiosity dictates. (You may even want to play a game to get them familiar with resources they may need to find the nice-to-know stuff.) Unlimited slides, limited words: Everyone is familiar with "Death by Powerpoint" as an expression--so we've had clients try to limit their presenter's slides...only to find that their presenters will add more information to each individual slide (we once had a company whose standard practice became a "quad"--4 slides on one--because they limited the slide number but not the content). We never put a limit on the number of slides, but each slide should be clean, clear, and minimalistic. The audience must be able to see your information. To that end; Slides shouldn't be fancy. They should be uncluttered, message-supporting (as opposed to message-conveying), and should NOT be speaker notes. Numbers should be easily seen and uninterpreted data charts should be minimized. It doesn't matter how important your number charts are (and they are!), if the audience can't see them and easily interpret them--they're a distraction.

NEW EPISODE IS UP! LISTEN HERE. 👂 In this solo episode, I’m talking about Kids and Big Emotions: How to Dial Up Your Emotional Intelligence and Respond Calmly. ❤️ Here’s the thing—before we can help our kids manage their emotions, we have to accept that they HAVE emotions. Emotions that are normal. Healthy. Natural. Supposed to be. ☝ Remember when your child was learning to walk, read, or ride a bike? Did you step in and do it for them, rush them, or get annoyed when they didn’t get it right away? Or did you give them time, stay patient, and let them figure it out?! It’s the same with emotions! Kids need to feel their way through them in order to learn how to handle them. But we often jump in too quickly because it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient to let them ride the emotional wave. The truth is, when we allow them to go through those messy feelings, we’re giving them the tools for self-regulation. 👀 I’ll tell you the one thing you can do that will completely shift how you handle things the next time your child is crying, stomping, or having a meltdown. I’ll also be sharing a viral quote of mine that really hit home for so many parents. Ready to approach those big emotions with more calm and confidence? Let’s get into it! https://lnkd.in/gP9zQUW4

Most people ignore these 3 questions when making a decision. Listening to the The Diary Of A CEO episode that had Dr. Layne Norton as Steven Bartlett guest, I was struck by a phrase that was used multiple times. “There are no solutions. Only trade-offs.” This was repeated by Dr. Norton a few times in the episode. I knew intuitively that it made sense but I didn’t know why or exactly what it meant. Until I read an article where the person who first used the phrase explained its meaning. Thomas Sowell is one of those few people who has made a mark in more than one field. In addition to being an economist, he is the author of “Late-Talking Children”. The book was born of his experience as a father whose son didn’t start talking until the age of four. Thomas Sowell disagrees with the idea of perfect solutions & presents they exist as utopian fantasies If a perfect solution seems to exist, it is only because these 3 questions have not been asked. 1️⃣ Compared to what? 2️⃣ At what cost? 3️⃣ What hard evidence do you have? I don’t have to be pursuing a perfect solution to be able to use this in my daily life. Even decisions that appear so obvious that they seem to make themselves contain these 3 questions. It’s just that we have answered them subconsciously & understood the trade-offs to be acceptable. Here’s the bit that struck me the hardest. We answer these questions daily & most of the times we don’t even realise it. What would we do differently if we were more mindful of these questions on just some of those occasions.

Ever find yourself stuck in a loop of excuses, wondering why nothing changes? I’ve been there too, and let me tell you, nothing shifts until you take that first step! 💥 I used to get caught up in thinking about what I couldn’t do or why I hadn’t started yet. But here’s the truth: it doesn’t matter where you start, just start somewhere. Even something as simple as cleaning out my messy closet in a way that makes it neat and easy to find everything when I need it. I watched just one episode of Marie Kondo (she’s amazing, have you seen it?) and I started working on it for a week, doing a little bit each time. Every small action you take gets you closer to your goals🌟 Now, opening my closet feels like such a relief! Do it right once, and it saves you so much time later. And I've been so happy ever since! Believe me, excuses like “I don’t know where to start,” “I’m not sure what I want,” or “I don’t have time” are just ways to delay progress. I’ve used them all, but I learned that real change comes from taking action. If you want something badly enough, you’ll find a way to make it happen, even if it’s a bit scary. So, what’s holding you back from starting your journey toward your dreams? Everything you want is within reach if you choose to act. Ready to stop making excuses and start making progress? Drop a comment and let me know how you’re planning to take action! 🥰

Busy month at Agency Darlings but Meredith Fennessy Witts are back on track. 💪 Today's episode is about Imposter Syndrome. And this is a topic I didn't know much about before starting my business...but something I've become intimately familiar with. Not just in my own experience but in my work with agency founders too. It's so important to learn how to interpret it as a growth marker...as opposed to a growth block. Today we're diving into: → What % of entrepreneurs and small business owners experience imposter syndrome → Why imposter syndrome often affects high-achieving women and marginalized groups → The Dunning-Kruger effect and why more expertise can sometimes lead to more self-doubt 🎙️ Listen here: bit.ly/agencydarlings PS! We dropped TWO new episodes last week too...so if you missed those make sure to catch up before our season finale in two weeks. 👀

In our family, meal times can become a hurried experience before rushing to the next thing. This is especially true in the summer months. In the midst of all the summer activities, we can forget to hold on to all the small, meaningful moments. I recently had Karen Mangia on the podcast. She wrote an entire book inspired by Sunday dinners with her 100-year-old grandfather, a tradition she has kept up for years and years. Each chapter includes a family recipe, a conversation prompt, and wisdom shared during their weekly meal together with the intention of cultivating conversation, connection, and community. It got me thinking about how I can be intentional as we sit down together for dinner in the evenings. This week, I’m asking my girls these questions: What are your summer priorities? What is your biggest highlight & hardest lesson from the school year? What is one family adventure you want to do this summer? Who is one friend you HAVE to hang out with over break? What is one thing you want to read, learn, and do this summer? Let’s have this be our reminder - that in between the camp drop-offs, 50 bottles of sunblock and popsicle sticks in the grass - we’ll intentionally cultivate conversation and connection with our family this summer. What convo prompts would you add to this list?
