When businesses get to know their customers, they also get to know more about what they need to grow. Remember when Main Street businesses were locally owned and operated? The owners knew you by name and knew your shopping habits. Additionally, they typically knew what you wanted to buy. Not surprisingly, they were willing to get it in for you if they didn't have it. #GetToKnowYourCustomersDay

Do not support your local businesses. Make sure no one does. Also make sure those businesses become the best version of themselves, so that people cannot wait to patronize them. A simple change of perspective. A simple way of looking at things from a different angle, can change the entire relation of local businesses with their community. In the same manner as not calling them "small" businesses but local and independent suddenly gives them agency, sets them up for a story, elevates their voices and removes the blockage of size. Some are fabulous ideas, that have gone through solid work and now boast attractive products, profitable business models, and excellent service and operations design. Others are mere alternatives to employment. Most are somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. The main street and downtown space is limited, geographically constrained and has the uniqueness of physical nearness. The foot traffic of one business will necessarily provide foot traffic to its neighbors. Any action that the top performing businesses make will necessarily benefit their neighbors. Any support they get to become more visible, reach a larger trade area and bring in more dedicated customers, will result in their neighbors getting an exposure that is exponentially larger than what they can garner by themselves. Therein lies the core of the proposal of Main Street Mavericks: in a main street context, upgrading the top performing businesses to become experiential, hospitable, transformative businesses puts the entire district on the map. Helping the top performers, or Attractors, become the hosts of downtown, will make downtown a better place to do business, a better place to visit, and a better place to be.

Small businesses are the heartbeat of Main Street. But they’re facing an uphill battle. Rising rents are pushing out local shops. National chains with deep pockets are taking their place. Alex Macias had to close his furniture store because of rent hikes. And he’s not alone. As someone who champions SMBs and entrepreneurs, we must ask: What’s the long-term impact on our communities when local businesses disappear? How can we collectively help these business owners thrive in a challenging environment? Take a moment to read the article and share your thoughts. I’d love to hear your insights on how we can better support the backbone of our economy—local entrepreneurs and small businesses. https://lnkd.in/gkZRSgsf #SMB #MainStreet
