The Limpopo Provincial Government Communicators' Forum was a great success, exceeding my expectations. The engagement from government communicators was incredibly encouraging, and it is clear that there is a strong desire for them to be part of a professional body like Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA). Many expressed a keen interest in elevating their careers through certification and aligning with industry standards. Our mission to professionalise the communication sector is gaining traction, and this forum highlighted the importance of continuous learning, ethical standards, and networking within the profession. We are now engaging with the Gauteng and Mpumalanga Premiers' offices to gain further support in professionalising government communicators. Additionally, discussions with GCIS are advancing, with the next steps focused on driving the professionalisation of the industry forward. A big thank you to the Premier of Limpopo for inviting PRISA to engage with all of their communicators, from district to local municipalities, provincial state-owned companies, the legislature, and the Premier’s office. On my way to 🇸🇪 to meet International Public Relations Network (IPRN) colleagues from across Europe to discuss trends and collaboration. One of the biggest learnings for me in the past five years is how brand reputation issues can leap markets/borders/timezones at speed and having the ability to provide genuine counsel in those areas is hugely important. Spotted via Bob Pickard on Bluesky last night - the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations confirmed earlier this week that “practicing public relations under any guise without NIPR certification is a criminal offense, punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both”. As public relations in the country “is now a recognised profession within the public service at the federal, state, and local government levels.” Some questions I have that require further reading: How will this be policed? Will it apply to global agencies and practitioners working in Nigeria, or just those with Nigerian headquarters? Is it just for those in government related PR roles and not consumer PR? Who ensures the NIPR is fairly granting certifications? As we continue to struggle with mis- and disinformation (see the World Economic Forum’s ‘Global Risks Report’ released today) is this a practice that we could ever see in the UK? What do comms pros think of the idea? Could it help secure PRs place as a management discipline? Or does it create an unnecessary barrier to entry to our industry? The IPRA International Public Relations Association Code of Conduct for professional public relations practice (adopted in 2011 as a consolidation of earlier codes) requires in its first article the observance of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It also enjoins practitioners “to act with honesty and integrity at all times so as to secure and retain the confidence of those with whom the practitioner comes into contact.“ (Article 2). The Code specifically requires practitioners to “[t]ake all reasonable steps to ensure the truth and accuracy of all information provided“ (article 7) and to “[m]ake every effort to not intentionally disseminate false or misleading information, exercise proper care to avoid doing so unintentionally and correct any such act promptly” (Article 8). So, far from public relations being about the distortion of reality to promote the interest of clients – “spinning” being the term popularly used to describe this – IPRA sees public relations as the truthful building of relationships and interests with the ultimate goal of human advancement. #PeerLearning #StratcommAfrica #CommunicationExcellence
