I've written a few Estimator job postings for clients. No two are the same. This is focused specifically on the responsibilities section. Each one outlines a different mission for the role. Each one influences the volume, type, and caliber of applicants in different ways. Generic lists of tasks attract generic off-target apps. Sometimes in life we get frustrated when people are not on the same wavelength. If you’ve never tried to help someone apply for a job in 2025, let me tell you—it’s like running a marathon with hurdles you didn’t know existed. Recently, I helped my 72-year-old dad, a retired business owner of 40+ years, apply for a cleaning position. A job that should have been straightforward turned into an obstacle course of online forms, irrelevant questions, and a process so convoluted it would make anyone want to give up. Imagine asking someone with limited computer skills to navigate this without support—it’s no wonder so many people are deterred before they even get started. Why do companies insist on using one-size-fits-all application forms for roles as diverse as cleaners and CEOs? Does a cleaner really need to write an essay on why they want the job and list the specific skills they bring to it? It made me think: how many other skilled, hardworking people—especially those like my dad—are overlooked because the system is designed to favor the digitally savvy? There has to be a better way. For businesses out there: streamline the process. Make it human-friendly. Let’s stop building walls for the very people we’re hoping to hire.
