Tracy Harris writes: The funding consists of: $16.0 million over four years from 2024–25 (and $4.4 million per year ongoing) for the Department of Education to monitor international student commencements at the sector and provider level to support the prioritisation of visa processing $7.7 million over four years from 2024–25 (and $0.4 million per year ongoing) to enable the Australian Skills Quality Authority to deliver additional integrity activities for Australia’s international vocational education and training sector, working closely with sector regulators $4.3 million over three years from 2025–26 (and $0.6 million per year ongoing) for the Department of Education to provide essential upgrades to the Provider Registration and International Student Management System (PRISMS).

The Department of Education and Australian Skills Quality Authority will be the beneficiaries of additional funding to strengthen the integrity and sustainability of the international education sector, following the release of the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) 2024-25 today. https://lnkd.in/gPJCNbP8

Investment in 3rd level education in Ireland has been a significant factor (amongst other factors) in Irelands economic success in attracting and keeping multinationals and FDI. We run the risk of adversely impacting this competitive advantage if underfunding of higher education continues.

I was asked recently to write a little piece on EU higher education policy - regrettably just before the EU higher education package came out on 27th March. But I think the key messages still hold: 1) let's remember to implement the already agreed higher education reforms, and use (correctly!) the many very helpful tools we have in the #EHEA 2) let's make sure nobody is left behind and that the more intense international cooperation such as within the European University Alliances is not an impediment but a support for cooperation is all different formats across the entire HE sector. https://lnkd.in/eztkmAsA

As a member of the 'Chaney Council' which recommended establishing a co-ordinating council for the international education sector, to ensure government understood the sector and could work collaboratively with the sector on identifying and addressing issues - it pains me deeply to say that the Council for International Education has failed. Let me be clear: that statement is NOT a criticism of any of the individual members of the Council - all of whom are good people who have acted in good faith. But it is an unavoidable fact that the sector now finds itself in almost exactly the same situation it did more than a decade ago - with even harsher measures yet to come in the form of provider caps. A new mechanism to engage and work with government is urgently needed and the international education sector needs to come together as one to agree on what that mechanism should be - and then to persuade government to act on its recommended new approach. I went to The Sutton Trust's launch of the OECD - OCDE's Education at a Glance yesterday. As always, it's a fascinating and really thought-provoking read. Key takeaways for me were: - Interesting uptick in young people in the UK studying for a tertiary qualification, which is well above the OECD average. With expenditure on tertiary education in the UK almost twice the OECD average, these will be really important findings for the university funding debate. - Sadly there has been no real improvement since 2016 in the proportion of young people in the UK getting upper-secondary qualifications. Not having this level of attainment has a real impact on work prospects for this group, which is particularly pronounced for women. We need to think hard about how to tackle this issue if we are to ease baked-in disadvantage. - There continues to be huge amounts of regional variation in attainment rates in the UK, compared with other OECD countries. Getting the current place-based emphasis on school and system improvement right feels fundamental to improvement here, as well as making sure broader policies don't make the variation even more stark.
