Making Better Places for People & Nature Excellent training day yesterday from Devon Loves Dogs - led by behaviour, access and countryside management expert Stephen Jenkinson. Devon Loves Dogs is a free membership scheme for dog owners and dog walkers, whose aim is to encourage responsible #dog ownership so that we can continue to enjoy our special #wildlife sites now and in the future. It was a packed day with lots of infornation. Key Takeaways: - 1/3 households have dogs (12.5M dogs in UK). The majority of visits to 'nature sites' are to walk dogs. - Dog owners/walkers want to go to places where their dogs can safely run off the lead. - A joined up approach is needed. If dog walkers are excluded from a site they will be displaced - potentially to more sensitive areas - Dog Walking can cause problems, especially on sensitive sites, through damage (erosion, compaction etc), contamination (fouling and flea treatments/dog shampoos), disturbance and conflict with other uses (e.g. livestock) - There are lots of benefits - exercise, #healthandwellbeing, engagement with #nature, activity can reduce anti-social behaviour or report issues (e.g. fires) - Design and management to create green spaces for everyone including dog owners is a positive way forward. - Education and the creation of Dog Ambassadors helps to change negative behaviour (some people don't know about ground nesting birds) - Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspaces (SANG), like Dawlish Countyside Park and Ridgetop Park, mitigate the impact of increased footfall on protected sites. Evidence shows these sites are attractive to dog owners (and need to be within 5-10km of where people live), and that they reduce the impact on protected sites, and thar their use increases in time as people become familiar with each site. - Positive messaging and relationship building with dog walkers works better than negative signage and exclusion - Important to provide residents and visitors with clear and consistent information across organisation/ownership boundaries - Where areas are especially sensitive (e.g. habitat for ground nesting birds) clear information, signage, fencing supported by on-site presence of wardens works Thanks for the informative and relevant pesentations Durwyn Liley, Julie Owen, Kim Strawbridge from Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust and site visits Imogen Salmon Katie Jones & Sama Euridge. The Residential Tenancies Act prevents landlords from implementing “no pets” policies [172] Such policies also raise human rights concerns. A rule that attempts to prohibit pets in rental housing would have an adverse effect on tenants who require “service animals” to help them in their mobility, or other disability-related needs, such as a blind person who uses a seeing eye dog [173] A housing provider is required to accommodate the needs of a person with a disability who needs to use a service animal. (174] 172: Section 14 of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, supra, note 22. 173: For a related case, see Fitzhenry v. Schememauer, (2008), C.H.R.R. Doc. 08-500 (Alta. H.R.P.). 174: See Di Marco v. Addressing the shortage of dog parks and pet-friendly trails requires an approach involving local government, community organizations, and residents. Several strategies could be used to increase the availability of these essential amenities. Engaging with local government officials and persuading for the creation of more dog parks and pet-friendly trails is a crucial first step. Pet owners and community members can create groups to voice their needs and explain the demand for these facilities. Public group posts, petitions, and local surveys can help describe the community’s support for these initiatives and encourage them to prioritize the construction of the facilities. Collaborating with local businesses and other stakeholders can provide financial support for the development of dog parks and pet-friendly trails. Businesses with an interest in pet related products and services will be willing to sponsor or contribute to the construction and maintenance of these facilities. Implementing pet-friendly elements into existing parks and recreational areas is another great solution. Designating certain areas within existing parks for off-leash dog play, or creating trails that accommodate both pets and people, can improve the accessibility of pet-friendly spaces without requiring the development and construction of entirely new facilities.

"Ollie’s Opinion on Tower Hamlets’ New Dog Policy 🐾" Tower Hamlets Council is proposing a new policy requiring all dogs to be on leads at all times in public spaces. While I understand the intention to ensure safety and maintain order, my puppy Ollie has some thoughts—and let’s just say he’s not wagging his tail in agreement! For many dogs (and their humans), the joy of exploring parks, chasing balls, and socialising off-lead is an important part of their wellbeing. Of course, responsible ownership—like training and picking suitable spaces—is key, but does restricting off-lead time completely really serve everyone’s best interests? Balancing the needs of all park users is essential, but I wonder: could the council explore alternatives, like designated off-lead areas, time slots, or additional training campaigns to support both dog owners and non-dog owners? Ollie and I would love to hear your views. Should we have stricter rules across the board, or is there room for a more nuanced solution? https://lnkd.in/ejcxQFUh #puppiesoflinkedin #dogs

🐕🦺 “There can be no ‘us and them’ when it comes to dog owners. Dogs are a highly valued and important part of our community. We will do much better trying to work with dog owners to value and protect dogs and kiwi in the places that they both live.” 🐕🦺 While the national average life expectancy of a kiwi can range between 40 and 50 years, in Northland it hovers around just 14 years. This is largely due to the impact of dogs. It’s not just kiwi that are at risk though. It’s a community-wide issue that can cause stock losses, injury to other pets and wildlife, and injury to people. In mid-2021, 32 sheep were mauled by two dogs on a farm in Kaikoura. Several people have been killed by dogs in Northland in the last few years. In May this year, four protected kororā/little blue penguins were killed by dogs in Wellington. We understand that dogs are important members of many New Zealanders’ families. In fact, many of our own team, and many other kiwi conservationists, have dogs too. That’s why we’re committed to working alongside other dog owners to find ways for dogs and kiwi to happily live near each other. Emma Craig lives on the ground in Te Tai Tokerau. She has extensive experience with kiwi and other wildlife and wants to work alongside dog owners and other organisations to better protect kiwi, other wildlife, and the dogs themselves. Last year, Save the Kiwi hired Emma through Jobs for Nature as a dog specialist. Let's explore the 'knowing-doing gap' in dog ownership. Despite knowing the right choices, some persist in actions that hinder accessibility for our canine friends. Take my experience: installing a sign to deter dog waste, only to find it relocated to my front door. Often made without considering the broader impact, these actions perpetuate barriers to pet accessibility. Now obviously, poop can't fix all our problems yet, but if we start considering the broader scoop of our actions, we can pave the way to a better community. #KnowingDoingGap #PetAccessibility #CommunityResponsibility #DogOwners #AGirlAndHerDog #DogAccessibility #DogPoop #PublicSpaces #DogParks #PetTransportation #FoodDeserts #ResponsibleDogOwners

Although you may love the dog park, your dog may not. In this informative article from the New York Times, the author discusses the problems of some dog parks. Unfotunately, the same dog park issues mentioned in this article, -the socialization myth -playground bullies -diseases -inattentive/uniformed pet parents can be 10 times worse for smaller dog runs at apartments. Smaller spaces will only amplify the issues. There are MUCH better options for dog-centered amenties. Picture dog sensory gardens, fetch zones, and low-key cabanas altered to be dog-friendly. Creating fair and effective pet policies is crucial for homeowners associations to ensure a harmonious living environment for all residents, whether they are pet owners or not. As more people consider their pets as part of the family, HOAs need to adapt by establishing clear, reasonable rules that balance the interests of pet owners with those who may not be as enthusiastic about animals. This blog post explores best practices for crafting pet policies that foster a pet-friendly community while maintaining community standards. https://lnkd.in/eMFzqhW3
