Looking forward to the peer review .. it doesn’t surprise me that the appointment of a women director per se might not have an impact on performance. Previous research shows the nil effect of diversity, per se, on workgroup outcomes. Inclusion is needed for diversity benefits. And we also already know that 30% representation is required for a gender benefit so we wouldn’t expect any statistically significant impact from gender diversity until board competition was closer to gender balance than simply the appointment of a woman to a board. Nothing to see here … “Professor Breunig said the results should be seen as a positive for gender advocates because they showed no negative consequence of appointing female directors. Almost 20,000 male non-executive directors were appointed in the reference period. But gender advocates including chairman of the 30% Club, Nicola Wakefield Evans, have disputed the findings, underlining the data only examines up until 2016 at which point there was a substantial increase in the representation of females on boards.” Patrick Durkin

The power of 3 is well documented. Let’s go Corporate America. Let’s “lean in” to more women on your boards!
Charter Advocate, current Advisory Board Member, and past Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans award recipient Claire Lewis (Yum) Arnold shares advice for new female board members: “Don’t be afraid to speak up, but also make sure that your voice is heard. One of the benefits of having multiple women on a board is they can reinforce each other’s contributions. Before you accept a board role, it is a good idea to interview all the other sitting board members. And make sure the business aligns with something you are passionate about.”

Great research (attached) by Pamm Phillips (at Deakin Research) on not just the effects of gender diversity on boards ("more effective decision making, communication, positive culture and better risk management") but the ancillary effects as well ("board processes became more professionalised in response to steps taken to attract and retain women on boards"). Please reach out if you're interested in discussing how we at Watson Board Advisors can help you directly recruit directors or if you'd like to review your nomination/election/appointment processes.

In conversation with Parvathi Benu at businessline, Sonakshi Chaudhry, Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Communications at The Quantum Hub, discusses the low share of women directors in Nifty50 companies. “Given that the commitment outlined under the 2013 Companies Act is for at least one woman director for companies of a certain category/size, that minimum threshold becomes the goal for organisations. To get them to move beyond just one woman director, there needs to be a concerted effort. First, there needs to be an alignment of incentives where regulatory action is accompanied by not only strict enforcement but also additional benefits for companies that achieve greater representation on their boards.” she mentioned. I’m looking forward to speaking at Representation Matters in New York next week, an evidence-based discussion on the importance and impact of women’s political representation. Building on key themes of the upcoming 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Oliver Wyman Forum, Women Political Leaders (WPL), and The World Bank’s Women, Business and the Law project, will preview findings from the second installment of their Representation Matters report. The report explores how women’s political leadership drives economic and societal progress. Following 2023’s inaugural report, this year's edition delves into the relationship between increased women’s political representation and women’s economic rights. I’ll join Monica Geingos, Arzu Rana Deuba, Isata Mahoi, Michelle Harrison, and Francine Pickup to share personal experiences and perspectives on leadership and ensuring women’s representation. Together we’ll discuss the research’s key findings, and what’s happening across government, business, and society to enhance women’s representation in both political and economic spheres.
