Blue Origin Reaches Orbit ****************************** Jeff Bezos-owned Blue Origin successfully launched its New Glenn rocket into orbit early Thursday on its first attempt, 25 years after the Amazon founder started the space company. The 320-foot rocket's payload, Blue Ring, is a spacecraft designed to move satellites to different orbits.    The launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, demonstrated the company's viability amid years of industry dominance by Elon Musk's SpaceX and its workhorse Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets (see comparison). The seven-engine, two-stage, partially reusable New Glenn rocket is designed to launch spacecraft into orbit and is contracted with NASA to launch a lunar lander as part of the third Artemis mission in 2027. Up to eight more New Glenn launches are anticipated this year. Elsewhere in space, astronaut Suni Williams conducted her first spacewalk during her current mission, seven months after being stranded on the International Space Station following the malfunction of the Boeing Starliner vehicle.  

In addition to the Mission 2 Milestones, ispace also announced Mission 2 Ventures, a set of criteria to measure effectiveness of lunar exploration operations on the surface of the Moon after landing. The Ventures include objectives for the TENACIOUS rover, including delivering the MoonHouse payload to the lunar surface as well as collecting lunar regolith under a contract with NASA. Open Gateway: Step into mock lunar orbit habitat at Space Center Houston https://lnkd.in/ge6BBA55 Over the long run having an orbiting habitat around the Moon makes sense. Just like the proposal for a habitat in Mars orbit made sense. They would be stepping stones. How to afford it all is the problem. Some say cancel Gateway, cancel SLS. What's next? Cancel Artemis? Do they want to go back to the way we did it during Apollo? Was it really an ill-conceived decision to build Gateway? I think it's better to go forward than backwards. To try it a new way with an infrastructure that will last for years. Learning how to live around the Moon is good preparation for how to live around Mars. It's called being "Earth Independent" We have a lot to learn before sending astronauts to Mars. Every system must be 100% reliable. A failure could be catastrophic for the human space program. That's something we can't afford.

Final Dragon Crew Spacecraft Completed! SpaceX teams in Hawthorne, California have accomplished another milestone by building the fifth and final Dragon crew spacecraft! Next stop: Florida, where preparations begin for its first mission to orbit!
