Interesting conversation. Do you update existing vehicles or do you create cheaper new platforms? This seems to be a topic across all of DOD. The newer platforms tend to be modular and easily adaptable to accommodate a variety of different missions but also the evolve with the landscape of war. As warfare evolves with technology so does the vehicles and vice versa. It is an iterative evolution driven by tech evolution by each of the countries. It’ll be interesting to see how vehicles evolve with AI, autonomy, and the increased analysis capabilities.

Lockheed Martin is working closely with customers to ensure AI models are trusted by the end-user to meet their mission needs. This is especially true with Lockheed Martin’s use of AI/ML in support of the U.S. Navy's Aegis Combat System. AL/ML helps the system assess threats and make decisions based on data. Already, this technology has helped make updates for destroyers to counter Houthi attacks. Lockheed Martin remains committed to advancing state-of-the-art autonomous systems in support of the U.S. Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) effort. The Skunk Works® team is hard at work, prioritizing speed to ramp and delivering quantity at scale to realize the Air Force vision of autonomous systems working synergistically with crewed and uncrewed systems to provide the ultimate in mission flexibility as part of a distributed team. Our work to develop and integrate pathfinding open architectures, ground control systems like the MDCX™ and mission systems continues. For some time, we’ve been focused on bringing to life the transformative power of autonomous and AI-enabled operations in crewed and uncrewed Department of Defense systems, with particular focus on integrating fifth generation aircraft. This commitment and work are ongoing. One of the future’s biggest challenges is data. Even now humans alone can’t make sense of -- or make quick decisions from -- all the sensor data they receive. Lockheed Martin is taking on this challenge by demonstrating how AI can analyze multiple, diverse data streams to create a prototype Earth and Space Observing Digital Twin of current global weather conditions for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Technology like this could provide greater situational awareness for many of the company’s other customers.

Lockheed Martin Space is leveraging AI/ML to deliver more accurate and timely data and insights for our partners across domains. Our Earth and Space Observing Digital Twin, built in collaboration with NVIDIA for NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, leverages AI to fuse data from earth and space sensors and detect anomalies in sea surface temperatures. And our Pony Express 2 tech demo leverages AI to monitor spacecraft telemetry and predict potential failures faster than humans, allowing controllers to mitigate challenges before they occur. 🚀 The New Frontier: Air Combat AI Challenge 🚀 Exciting news for everyone interested in the future of aerial combat! I'd like to share the latest about the "Air Combat AI Challenge," organized by Japan's Acquisition Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA). This challenge aims to develop AI models that can make decisions surpassing human capabilities in air combat scenarios. In the second Air Combat AI Challenge held in fiscal year 2022, participants were tasked with creating an AI model to control a team of aircraft in a simulated air battle. The Blue Team utilized a rule-based AI, while the Red Team employed a hybrid AI incorporating machine learning. Perception, Cognition, Action. The principles of autonomy are the same regardless of domain or platform. Despite this, achieving true autonomy (no GPS, no communications, no human pilot, successful mission execution) is not easy. It requires a hard-core engineering team with the right leadership, infrastructure, and design tools. Shield AI put all of these pieces together ­over nine years with a billion dollars behind it. The result: Our AI pilot is now on six platforms, and we are rapidly integrating with more. The same AI pilot that flew the Nova quadcopter inside buildings without GPS or communications in 2018 in Afghanistan, and on quick response missions to protect Israelis on October 7, 2023, has autonomously flown F-16s in dogfighting applications and is now onboard the Kratos MQM-178 Firejet, gearing up for flight tests.
