I will be showing what they did, what they found, and the implications for new possibilities for how we could work that has a far greater impact on people, whilst reducing demand with less resources. NatCen’s Centre for Deliberation ran a public dialogue commissioned by Campaign for Science and Engineering. The Centre explored attitudes towards public involvement in research and development (R&D). The public dialogue shaped the ‘People’s Principles for Involvement in R&D’. The People’s Principles highlight the importance of increasing awareness of involvement in R&D through communicating the benefits for participants, researchers, and wider society. Today we publish the results of our People’s Vision for R&D, a public dialogue exploring society’s stake in R&D, through emotional connection and opportunities to be involved in R&D. https://lnkd.in/eHeMMRcT 🤝 The results emphasise that the public’s emotional connection to R&D can be strengthened through the opportunity to learn more about it, and that our community’s choices can support an increased sense of public agency and ownership in R&D. 📝 The 33 participants collaboratively developed four People’s Principles for Involvement in R&D, which set out the public’s expectations and show what would increase connection with, and trust in, R&D. 💡 The opportunity for our sector is clear: Opening up R&D, in a way that respects the People’s Principles, will not just improve R&D. It will bring more people closer to research and establish a stronger, long-lasting relationship with the public, grounded in mutual trust. This will bring benefits for research, society and individuals. ✅ CaSE has produced a set of recommendations to further embed public involvement in R&D, framed around three connected challenges - culture, capacity and resourcing - and two overarching next steps. One of the highlights of working at the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) has been participating in the dialogue sessions with CaSE and NatCEN. These discussions were thought-provoking and reminded me that we are all human and we all want to have a say in decisions that impact us. Yet it is easy to think that some things are too complex to explain or that we do not have the time or resources to do so. As we face the many challenges of our time, we should consider how R&D comes across to people not involved in it. Whilst R&D plays a vital role in tackling these challenges, its success depends on considering real-life experiences and understanding and gaining approval from individuals across all parts of society. To do this we need to invest time in sharing knowledge, learning from one another, and enabling this to change priorities and set the direction of R&D. I have a lot of confidence in the People's Principles for Involvement in R&D and I am eager to see how researchers, academics and funders integrate them into their work. What are your thoughts on the principles?

🤝 What does collaboration look like in place-based initiatives? Our latest analysis highlights the importance of collaboration in driving successful place-based projects. While high engagement between community and voluntary sectors is common, we see less involvement from sectors like local government, education, and even local leaders like the Police. 💡 Key Insights: While community and voluntary sectors collaborate closely, organisations such as Education, Housing and the Police are involved less frequently. Notably, 70% of projects reported extensive community involvement, which is crucial for achieving genuine, lasting change. These complex social problems require cross-sector collaboration to truly transform communities.
