A must read for tech companies looking to enter or grow in the hospitality industry, with great (as always!) insights from Douglas Rice. From my perspective as a communication advisor I couldn't agree more with the first task, which is to define who your customer is. Any communication strategy and plan should start with the audience first. Unfortunately this is often not the case, with a focus on content and channels instead, to achieve wide, global reach. By identifying who your product is for and articulating what problem you can solve for them, you will be able to more effectively and efficiently reach the right audience with the right message.

🌍 **Reflections on My Trip to Canada & USA: Building a Global Seafood Network** 🦞🐟🍤🦀 Over the past two weeks, I had the opportunity to visit our colleagues in Halifax and meet with both current and potential customers in Canada and the USA. As we continue expanding our presence in the international seafood industry, this trip provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities our customers face daily. Maritech cloud-based software is already helping many seafood companies streamline processes across the value chain, and we’re proud to have a major market share in Norway. Now, with the experience we've gained working with Norwegian customers, we are confident in our ability to help our international clients enhance efficiency and gain greater control over traceability. In Canada, I had insightful conversations with a customer who has been on our new cloud platform for a year. It's great to see the benefits they are experiencing, but it's also essential to address the challenges they face. It gives me a lot of inspiration for product improvements and new features😉 We also had a workshop with another customer which is still using our on-prem platform—helping them make the transition to the cloud is a priority for us, and I’m excited to see the potential. Every market has its unique culture and working style, and North America is no exception. While change can be challenging, we believe that with our team’s expertise and the trust of our customers, we can navigate these transitions together. A successful implementation requires collaboration, and we’re committed to providing the support needed every step of the way. We also truly appreciate the warm welcome and valuable dialogue our customers have offered during this trip. Hospitality is neither easy nor for the faint if heart if you have a tech solution and plan to sell into. Fortunately, Douglas Rice, is sharing wisdom on what to consider and pitfalls to avoid in his weekly column. There are few as expert and experienced as Doug much less who convey insight so clearly and effectively.

Several months back, I read a book that was recommended by my dear friend Brinn Strange. It was titled “Unreasonable Hospitality.” I had a few hour plane flight, so it seemed like the perfect fit to fill that time. And Brinn is an avid reader, so anything that gets her stamp of approval requires no further investigating from me. I became fascinated by every page. Every chapter. Every decision Will Guidara made to elevate his restaurant to #1 in the world. Yes, world.🌎 You may be asking - why do I care? Isn’t healthcare my passion? Yes. And that’s WHY I care. Because other industries are doing things right. Other industries have figured out that human relationships are the real currency. Yes, tech has a role. And yes, profit is needed to sustain the business. But none of that is important if we forget the human element. Elizabeth Durnan and I have had countless conversations this year with healthcare C-suite execs, current consultants, and physicians on the front lines. We kept coming back to the same conclusion - the current approach clearly isn’t working. In fact, we went through many periods of time that we needed a break from the conversations because it was heartbreaking to see more of what’s wrong and not have a seat at the table to help fix it. So I took my deep appreciation for this book and Will’s work and became certified in Unreasonable Hospitality. I went through this framework for my own business and shocked myself at how many touch points I could elevate, despite what I felt was some pretty solid elevation 😁 There is not one single part of this that involves AI taking over. Or using tech to prioritize efficiency over human relationships. This isn’t the cool kid on the block. Yet. It doesn’t check a box like Six Sigma or Lean. In fact, it doesn’t check any boxes. Because it’s extremely individualized and intentionally out-of-the-box. In other words, fully in alignment with what I want to do and WILL do in the healthcare space. You see, I already know first hand what physicians are feeling. My husband is a physician and we have dated since well before medical school. In fact, I’m actively watching him and his colleagues feel overworked, under appreciated, and fought against at the C-suite table. I also know first hand what patients are feeling. I watched my Dad die in the care, or lack thereof, of his medical team. And I’ve been doing nothing but advocating for patients since 2017. I’ve heard their stories. Wiped their tears. And held their hands. If you run a healthcare facility, or know someone who does, I would love to have a dynamic conversation about the meaningful and necessary change this framework combined with my experience can have on the people you employ and serve 💕
