Electrifying Last-Mile Logistics A big part of decarbonizing supply chains is converting last-mile delivery carriers into electric or alternative fuel vehicles. The strategic-level decisions require choosing the fleet type and size with specifications related to the battery size (range) and mileage, the charger type, and the charging schedule. At the operational level, the routing decisions require satisfying the limitations of the electric carriers, such as their range, while minimizing the total energy consumption of the entire fleet. We formulated an electric vehicle routing problem which seeks to find the minimum fleet size required to serve a set of customers given the capacity and range limitations of the vehicles. At a second layer, the problem also minimizes the total routing energy consumption of the entire fleet.  All carriers are assumed to charge overnight for a period termed the “Layover.” The required number of chargers is optimized based on the energy consumption of carriers, the charging rate, and the layover time.
