Could a role like this be something for Creative Australia to consider? Earlier this year, British MPs backed demands for a freelancers’ commissioner to champion the interests of creative freelancers. The report from the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre (PEC) found that freelancers comprised a significant minority of the creative workforce, amounting to around 28% of the sector according and that the "one-size-fits-all” approach to creative industries and employment policymaking doesn’t work for creative freelancers. The situation in Australia is similar. I will be following this appointment in the UK with interest to see if it has real impact. Is anyone at Theatre Network Australia or Live Performance Australia aware of a report similar to the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre (PEC) that shows what portion of the Australian arts sector is freelance? Our freelance, independent and small to medium practitioners are a vital part of the sector however we don't have a strong advocate and systems are set up in opposition to the way in which we practice. How can we have a voice? Could this be a way? I am interested to hear what others think. https://lnkd.in/gmti_s_F

Artists as Workers, released this year by Creative Australia, states that 78% of professional artists 'work on a freelance or self-employed basis'. Creative Workplaces, has been set up within Creative Australia as part of the National Cultural Policy, has the remit to address these issues, as well as workplace issues more generally. Creative Workplaces will be running industry consultation sessions starting soon, and these will be a good opportunity for artists to advocate for action on structural change. They are currently accepting feedback on their consultation schedule and topics. I suggest that we ask them to specifically include freelance work in their topic of concern. https://lnkd.in/gCHRYpMh You can read the summary of the Artists and Workers report here, the statistic I've quoted is found on page 29. https://lnkd.in/gFcE-5z9

🌟 Did you know that as we grow older, our inner child still influences how we perceive and interact with the world? 🌟 This inner child holds onto past experiences—both positive and negative—shaping our responses to current situations. For instance, if you faced rejection or criticism as a child, your inner child might still harbor feelings of inadequacy or fear of rejection. These feelings can manifest in adulthood as low self-esteem or avoidance of certain situations. For freelance interpreters, this can be particularly challenging. Avoiding client acquisition due to past fears can impact your success and growth. But there’s hope! 🌟 Join us in our weekly live meetings where interpreters come together to support and uplift each other. Let’s address these inner challenges and build a community of confidence and strength. See you there! 💪✨ #interpreter #interpreterlife #interpreters

Good question. What does the UK film industry want from the next government? Key stakeholders are calling for: · Sturdier support for the largely freelance workforce · Research and development tax credits opened up to the creative sectors · Enhanced protection for creatives in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) · Best mental health practices tied to the license agreements for broadcasters · Tying good mental health policy to tax relief programmes · New forms of trade expo support for creative industry SMEs

#key things you wish you knew earlier in your career- part 2 💡 #Value your work: Don't undervalue yourself. Set fair prices for your art and don't be afraid to negotiate ☺️ 💡Learn the #business side: Understand contracts, copyright, and how to manage finances as a freelance artist. 💡Stay #inspired: Surround yourself with creativity, seek inspiration from various sources, and don't be afraid to experiment, this is what I do daily and I learn from my mistakes and have evolved 😀 💡Take #criticism constructively: Feedback is essential for growth. Learn to accept criticism and use it to improve your work. Definitely ask someone who loves you and don't fall for naysayers 😑 💡#Persistence is key: Building a career as an artist takes time and effort. Stay dedicated, keep creating, and don't give up. If you found value in this please take time to like and follow! I truly appreciate it highly ☺️🥰❤️

🛑 Are Young Creatives of Colour a Joke to You? 🛑 I've had enough. Recently, an NGO president and founder approached me, begging (no exaggeration!) for my help on a "sustainable, eco-responsible, for young creatives of colour and to promote African voices" project. She also went on and on about how she doesn't feel right about employing young people without fair compensation, a sentiment I fully agreed with before explaining my expectations and rates for this project. Eager to contribute, I jumped in, in good faith, only to discover later that there was NO FUNDING SECURED, or any means of payment for that matter. Yet, the person lead me on, exploited my perspective, expertise and passion. I poured my heart and soul into freelance work, only to be met with refusal to compensate me when I spoke up about this injustice. Do you wonder why young people are drained, tired, and hopeless in the marketplace? Because we're being exploited, taken advantage of by those who should be supporting and uplifting us. We're left to rot away in jobs devoid of passion because those in positions to nurture our creativity, expand our potential and create opportunities for growth show us the ugly side of the world far too soon, far too fast. You want to know what's wrong with young creatives these days? Why we have our guard up and "too lazy" for your taste? It's because you pay us in "exposure," or promise the world, only to disappear when it's time to deliver. Well, guess what? You're the problem! It's time for a change. It's time to value the contributions of young creatives, to compensate us fairly, and to provide genuine opportunities for creative expression. Stop exploiting our passion and talent for your own gain. #StopExploitation #YoungCreatives #CreativeExpression #EnoughIsEnough
