🌍 **Oregon's Welcome Center in the News** Oregon's Welcome Center initiative, designed to provide housing and support for asylum seekers, was abruptly shut down after just 14 months of operation. The closure leaves 469 people without the promised support, with some families, including young children, turned away due to lack of space. Despite acknowledging the gaps the closure would create, state officials attributed the decision to the high operating costs. Read the The Oregonian / OregonLive.com article for an in depth look https://ow.ly/OHhF50QywCM 🤔 **What Went Wrong?** The Welcome Center's closure sheds light on challenges in Oregon's two-year budget cycle, with the initiative launched without a formal plan or funding pitch. High demand and escalating costs further complicated matters, leading to the decision to redirect funds towards moving families to rental apartments. 💔 **Community Impact** The closure has had varying effects on asylum seeking community members. While some found stability and support through the Welcome Center, others faced difficulties, including sleeping on the streets upon arrival. Abandoning the Welcome Center model would mean reverting to outdated methods, potentially leaving vulnerable families without essential support. 📢 **Advocates Call for Action** Portland Refugee Support Group, along with several partner advocate organizations, argue that, despite its imperfections, the Welcome Center represents a crucial step towards a coordinated government response to asylum seekers, reducing reliance on non-profit organizations. We are rallying for continued funding and an improved long-term plan through our Oregon House Bill 4159. #OregonAsylumSeekers #HumanitarianCrisis #AdvocacyForChange

👉People escaping conflict and instability face so much adversity. However, it quickly becomes a struggle to make ends meet. Banned from working, refugees in the asylum system rely solely on asylum support, currently set at £7 a day to cover food, clothing, transport, toiletries, and more. This is the harsh reality faced by refugees who are often on the brink of destitution and homelessness. But it's not just about survival; it's about dignity and empowerment. Refugees have so much skill, talent and enthusiasm, and with the right support they can enrich and strengthen our communities. 💜 🌎 Nobody deserves to go hungry, and nobody should sleep on the streets. Our homes should be a place where we feel safe and secure. However, forcibly displaced families living in urban areas can face substantial hurdles in finding a place to live. Even when they do, they can be exposed to harassment and #discrimination from their landlords and neighbors. That is why we are here to help on both fronts: our community outreach teams support refugee families to find emergency and long-term housing from supportive landlords, and our legal teams support refugee communities as they assert their rights as tenants to prevent unlawful eviction or intimidation. We want all refugee communities to feel welcome and supported in their new homes. #Refugees #RefugeesWelcome #NoHumanIsIllegal #ForcedDisplacement #HumanRights

NEW: The Refugees (Family Reunion) Bill is being debated in the House of Lords TODAY. Introduced by the Liberal Democrats, this bill could offer hope to families torn apart by war and persecution, giving them a chance to reunite in safety. We need the Government to support - they must take this vital step and make family reunion a reality. This bill would: ☑️Allow refugee children in the UK to bring their parents and siblings to safety, giving them the chance to rebuild their lives together. ☑️Let unaccompanied and separated children outside the UK join their refugee siblings already here. Families belong together, but current policies make reunification nearly impossible for many. It's time to fix this broken system and give families a chance to rebuild their lives, together.
