Following a record breaking 2023 for us at the London Designer Outlet, Matt Slade and Daniel Tomkinson sat down with Liz Hamson at BE News to reflect on the successes of the golden quarter, the last 10 years, and the value of working in close partnership with brands. Exploring the reasons for LDO’s success since its opening a decade ago, Matt Slade, Retail Director at Quintain Ltd, said: “Shoppers are increasingly time poor and want to get the most out of their money and their travel. Interesting perspective from this long standing Colorado based outdoor specialist …it’s a very different market to the UK (he said enviously) given the backcountry location and climate but it’s notable that Bent Gate Mountaineering are struggling with the same basic issue as the rest of us …ie widespread (mainly) online discounting and the difficulty in getting decent margin on outdoor gear. On a more positive note it’s also interesting to see Rab being mentioned as a top seller, highlighting the UK brands increasing presence in the US market.

I've enjoyed watching the Berghaus/Lidl banter play out since we launched the new Berghaus ICONS campaign with man of the moment Liam Gallagher. This campaign was all about reminding people Berghaus is an iconic British outdoor brand with the comeback of some of the most iconic Berghaus products. We used a mass of audience insight and precision timing to ensure Berghaus was part of Britain's cultural conversation. Not only did our iconic (carefully placed) OOH sites create intrigue, talkability and buzz as they were being created (at a time when all anyone could talk about was Oasis tickets), but Lidl also helped carry on the conversation with a very clever placement.
