Sustainability in healthcare is about resilience while being green. The NHS’s renewed focus on sustainable practices—from energy efficiency to waste reduction—is a reminder that healthcare systems must adapt to protect both patients and the planet. For us at London Healthcare Locums, this aligns perfectly with our ethos. Efficient systems not only save resources but also improve patient outcomes. For example, adopting digital solutions reduces the paperwork burden, giving healthcare professionals more time to focus on care. As leaders in this field, it’s our duty to champion these efforts. Because a sustainable healthcare system is essential for future generations. What sustainability initiatives have you seen in action? Share your thoughts and let’s discuss how we can all contribute. #NHSEngland #Healthcare #NHS #Locums #DoctorsOfUK #LocumLife #MedicalProfessionals

NHS Trusts and healthcare organisations invited to take part in co-developing a prototype to help understand, report and manage the carbon footprint of their care pathways. The NHS is committed to becoming the world's first net zero national health service by 2040. With this commitment comes a series of objectives, actions and reporting responsibilities for all health and care organisations. The Net Zero Health and Care Pathway Tool uses a global standard for calculating greenhouse gas emissions and applies this across an entire care pathway. Not only does this simplify measurement and reporting but by capturing carbon cost across care pathways, rather than at a functional or departmental level, plans and performance can be more accurately evaluated to improve decision-making and accelerate system-wide progress. We are offering access to the prototype version, free of charge, for NHS trusts or organisations wanting to be at the forefront of sustainable healthcare innovation To find out more, please follow this link https://bit.ly/3WNdpxQ #NHS #NHStrust #nezero #Healthcare Olu Akinremi Becky Jones

Since July 2022, the NHS has become the first health system in the world to embed net zero into legislation and best practice through the Health and Care Act 2022, with significant duties placed on NHS England, and all trusts, foundation trusts, and integrated care boards to contribute towards statutory emissions and environmental targets. We understand that this places enormous pressure on clinicians and healthcare providers alike, but the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare has been helping healthcare professionals and organisations to understand the connections between health and environment and reduce healthcare’s resource footprint since 2008, and we can help you make sure that your clinical practice or your healthcare policies are meeting these new requirements with a range of significant resources and educational opportunities. https://buff.ly/323uuWz #SustainableHealthCare #GreenHealth} #netzero

Supply chains are a significant contributor to any organisation’s carbon footprint and, in this research published today, my co-authors and I quantified just how big that contribution is for WA’s public health care system. We found that 47.4% of WA Health’s carbon footprint was generated in its supply chains, 32.4% in the delivery of care, and 20.2% by transport. There is increasing focus on the role of health care systems in both adapting to and mitigating climate change, as seen in the Australian Government’s recently launched National Health and Climate Strategy. Our results indicate that any strategy focused on decarbonisation should not be limited to the direct delivery of care but should also include the emissions embedded in the supply chains that support that delivery of care. #climatecrisis #sustainability #supplychains #healthcare #USYD https://lnkd.in/gX7beCcs

Are national policy levers currently used in the NHS in England supporting or blocking progress towards net zero care? As #COP29 and discussions on international efforts on net zero targets come to a close, we have been looking at this question to identify policy gaps and suggest what could be changed to make faster progress to net zero care. As the government develops a 10-year plan for the NHS, our analysis sets out four priorities for policymakers to ensure progress on net zero is maintained: ➡️ Strengthen existing accountability for net zero. ➡️ Systematically consider environmental impacts when reforming policy levers. ➡️ Align action on net zero with other health system priorities, such as reducing health inequalities and improving care efficiency. ➡️ Address key policy gaps with potential to drive sustainable care, such as on capital investment, health technology appraisals, and improvement capacity and capability. Caring for the earth is integral to supporting healthcare in our time and for future generations. This commitment to sustainability is central to our Catholic Mission at SSM Health. We are heartened by the many hospital and health system professionals who supported the Joint Commission’s launch of a voluntary certification program on sustainability. Dr. Jonathan Perlin, president and CEO of the Joint Commission, reports that interest in the new certification program is generating inquiries every day, including one framed as a New Year’s resolution. We agree with Dr. Perlin: health systems are realizing that environmental preservation is an essential aspect of caring for patients sustainably. Read more: https://bit.ly/3unyjcG At SSM Health, we have been committed to preserving the Earth for over 25 years, taking action to reduce our energy consumption and medical waste. In January 2024, the same month that applications for the Joint Commission certification program opened, we launched a new multi-year, solar energy initiative that will even more significantly reduce our health system’s carbon footprint. We embrace our responsibility to maintain the health of our people and planet. #Sustainability

With today being Earth Day, it’s worth taking the time to consider the impact that our industry has on the planet, and what we and our members can do to minimise our carbon emissions and environmental impact. At our inaugural Net Zero Conference, we had organisations and speakers from across the industry share their initiatives and what they were doing to reduce their carbon emissions. There was a panel on how providers can manage their supply chain towards net zero, along with a presentation from nurses across our membership base on how clinicians and employees more generally can drive change from the bottom up. With healthcare amounting to around 5% of net emissions in the UK, it’s vital and important that independent healthcare providers have set themselves an ambitious commitment to be net zero for scope 1 and 2 by 2035 and for scope 3 by 2045. Decarbonising healthcare will not decarbonise the UK or indeed the world, but it is an important step forward, and can create positive pressure on our supply chains to decarbonise not just healthcare products and services but other industries as well. Watch below to hear from Dr Jonny Groome, who spoke at our Net Zero Conference, who speaks to the global effort requires for decarbonisation, and how healthcare can play a leading role.
