A privilege to be asked to deliver the keynote at The University of Edinburgh Advanced Care Research Centre symposium today - so many outstanding researchers and academics in the audience, it was a daunting prospect. But the invited topic lends itself to good discussion - how do we age well in a time of crisis? Many ways of looking at this, but creating the conditions to extend healthy life expectancy through a prevention agenda over the life course is the starting point. And creating sustainable and responsive health and care services when they’re needed is critical. Intervening upstream and delaying multimorbidity and frailty must be our goal. There’s a developing evidence base on what will work too. And by taking an approach that sees Realistic Medicine and Value Based Health and Care define how we support and work with people, we’re more likely to make this sustainable. Great discussion and questions afterwards have left me eager to hear more about what others are doing and how research and data can help inform our next steps.

The report addresses urgent challenges and outlines priority areas like creating a strategic national vision, streamlining funding, prioritizing health equity, and developing a future-ready workforce.   Dr. Reece and his colleagues highlighted the need for better coordination of resources to tackle pressing health issues and improve research outcomes.
