I've been saying this for years.., I know many tradespeople today who make well above the average household income in America. Most earn six figures every year in a high-demand industry. While their work is typically called "blue collar" work, trades workers understand math and science better than many people. They are life-long learners who keep up with ever-changing building codes, building products, and technologies to keep our standard of living on the cutting edge. I cringe when the news media calls them "uneducated" in their polls. It just shows that many people are uneducated on how much education it takes to be a professional tradesperson. If you're a parent reading this and your child wants to skip college to be an electrician, carpenter, HVAC mechanic, fabricator, welder, plumber, etc., please take time to research the trades with them just like you would colleges. Help them make an educated decision based on real-world ROI. They'll be happy you did. And our country will be stronger as a result.

The UBC has partnered with the Job Corps program for over 50 years to provide their students with entry-level carpentry skills via hands-on training, while also learning about important construction procedures. UBC Job Corps currently operates 73 programs in 46 states with 118 highly trained instructors. The newest initiative between the UBC and Job Corps is the very first millwright pre-apprenticeship program. This program will help to prepare students for an apprenticeship and career as a millwright. Millwrights are industrial mechanical experts that focus on planning, installing, aligning, maintaining, refurbishing, repairing, and dismantling industrial machinery and rotating equipment, commonly around power generation. The projects that require a millwright’s expertise are in gas, steam, nuclear, coal and hydro power plants, paper and steel mills, material handling, conveyors, automotive, aerospace, food plants, pharmaceutical facilities and virtually any other manufacturing plants. As the world is seeing more movement towards green energy, our millwrights are increasing their demand for work related to onshore and offshore wind farms. With the growing demand for skilled tradespeople, collaborative programs like this help prepare the next generation of skilled workers and also meet the needs of the industry.
