I started my career in a nationalised rail industry and looks like I am going to finish my career in a nationalised railway industry and I just hope that the ending is better than the beginning????

When can we expect a road safety strategy and begin to address the tens of thousands of people killed or seriously injured on our roads every year, not to mention the billions £ in cost to the public purse.

Matt Higgins

Principal Inspector (Active Travel)

Congratulations on your appointment. There's a whole industry of people waiting to hear your position on walking, wheeling and cycling (active travel). If you could provide clarity on the Labour policy position on how you see active travel helping to deliver green, inclusive and sustainable transport and healthy communities it would be greatly appreciated.

So good to have a Minister for Transport who actually cares about …..Transport. Emerald Airlines aka Aer Lingus Regional flies more routes from Belfast to GB than any other airline. Time to abolish the Air Passenger Duty on all UK domestic routes.

Sarah Smithurst MBE

Congratulations, maybe a re look at B&E tests or let the working group give you ideas , we sit on that group within DFT , there are 3 groups who have been trying to out right the mess that was made but when your hands and feet are tied, it’s difficult. I also sit on the APPG for trailer safety. This all needs looking at with fresh eyes and the help of bodies who are in the industry and have a good understanding of what could be possible to make roads safer and save the money and time when an accident happens.

It will be wonderful to see how this government makes change for the better on the Rail Industry. As a very fortunate railway engineer of 32 years I have been lucky to have worked on lots of projects with some being truly amazing and some not so great. However projects like Northern Power House rail are 10 years in the making and yet still at very early stage development due to a lack of delivery focus by both the DFT and NWR. I was lucky to work on the Olympics that got awarded in 2007 and delivered its Rail Related work by 2011, and that included resignalling, Platform Extensions, Electrification and asset improvements for reliability. So the U.K. does not need to miss two generations of people to deliver rail projects. It needs experience and people that are accountable to make informed decisions. I haven’t seen that in Network Rail or the DFT for some time.

Unbelievable - nothing about safer roads, Vision Zero, casualty reduction - less death and life changing injuries on our roads. Who’s advising Ms. Haigh? UK, a maritime nation. 90% of cargo is transported by sea and yet maritime transport is not even mentioned on the list of priorities. Disappointing, a truly forgotten industry both by politicians and public opinion.

Perhaps a good start would be to realize that those 5 points are just generic fluff , and that to actually achieve something /anything greater precision and focus is required.

I noted your priority of "transforming infrastructure to work for the whole country, promoting social mobility and tackling regional inequality". In Barrow Hill Community Trust we are working to do exactly that in a community which does not have access to private transport and is in the top 2% of child deprivation. Yet, you just canceled our rail station - part of an integrated intervention including a £3.6m community services hub (whose business case relied on the station). We would love to discuss how we can work together more effectively on community regeneration in your own back yard (we are only 6 miles from Heeley).
