It’s Okay If It’s Neither Merry Nor Bright This Year The holidays can feel like a mountain we’re expected to climb—full of pressure to be cheerful, organized, and festive. But if this year has been hard (and let’s be honest, for many it has), it’s okay if you’re not feeling merry or bright. It’s okay if: 🎄 Your tree isn’t decorated (or there isn’t one at all). 🎁 You forgot a gift or skipped sending cards. 📸 There’s no matching pyjama photo or perfect family moment. ✨ The traditions you usually love just feel like too much this year. What matters most is you. The little moments of joy, even if they don’t look or feel like they used to. It’s okay to take it one day at a time, finding small ways to be kind to yourself. If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. You are loved, and we need you here. The decorations, the gifts, and the traditions can wait. Right now, just focus on making it through, letting in whatever small glimmers of light you can find. One day at a time. One breath at a time. Maybe Next year will bring a new view. #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay #HolidayStress #MentalHealthSupport #SelfCompassion #YouAreLoved #ItsOkayToRest #TakingItOneDayAtATime #mentalhealthmatters

Growing up in the South, I was lucky to experience holidays filled with joy, laughter, and creativity. Our gatherings revolved around fun games, catching up, and the silly charm of white elephant gift exchanges. These events were wonderfully low-cost, focusing on creating joy and endless laughter for everyone. Even after 20 years, these traditions continue, bringing cheer and connection to our lives. Although I haven’t been able to attend for many years, I think about them fondly. What makes them even more special now is envisioning the next generation embracing the same values—finding happiness in togetherness rather than extravagant spending. It’s a reminder that the true spirit of the holidays lies in the memories we create with loved ones. Holiday Experience Ideas Looking to create your own holiday traditions that focus on connection and fun without breaking the bank? Here are some ideas to inspire you: Holiday Scavenger Hunt Idea: Create a list of holiday-themed items to find around your neighborhood or in nature (e.g., a red bird, a pinecone, a house with Christmas lights). Helpful Tip: Get the kids involved in brainstorming items for the list for extra fun! Holiday Movie Marathon Idea: Choose a selection of your favorite holiday movies and plan a cozy marathon day with popcorn and hot cocoa. Resources: Rotten Tomatoes – for holiday movie ratings IMDb – for comprehensive movie lists Streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Holiday Storytime Idea: Read classic holiday stories like The Night Before Christmas or A Christmas Carol. Make it interactive by assigning roles to each family member. Free Stories Online: Project Gutenberg Holiday Baking Idea: Bake holiday treats together—think gingerbread cookies or holiday cupcakes. Recipe Inspiration: Allrecipes BBC Good Food Holiday Craft Night Idea: Get creative by making holiday decorations like paper snowflakes, ornaments, or DIY gifts. It’s easy to feel the pressure to make the holidays “perfect,” but simplicity often brings the most joy. Embrace low-cost or no-cost traditions, like family game nights, baking together, or decorating homemade ornaments. Teens benefit from seeing that joy isn’t tied to price tags and that the holidays can be meaningful without overspending. Remember, what matters most is the time spent together, not the money spent. Letting go of the need for extravagance and focusing on connection, love, and presence is the most meaningful lesson you can pass on, creating holiday memories that are joyful, relaxed, and authentic.

It’s easy to get swept up in the idea of a picture-perfect holiday. But it’s not perfect food, decorations, or presents that make the holidays special. It’s the magic of coming together with loved ones and friends that makes this time of year special. Of course, even though we know that logically, it can still be hard not to feel disappointed when things don’t live up to our standards. So here’s an idea that helps me when I’m missing out on some of the joy of the season by focusing on the little details like messy wrapping paper or imperfect holiday treats. Reflect back on your most cherished holiday memories. Think back about what made the memory special for you. Was it a particular “thing” or was it the experience and spending time with someone you cared about? I’m guessing it’s the latter. #perfectionistleader #leadershipcoach #lifecoach #personaldevelopment

The festive season is upon us, and it’s time to embrace the magic of Christmas! 🎄✨ During this joyful time, it's essential to find ways to switch off from work and truly enjoy the holidays. One of the best ways to disconnect is to set clear boundaries. Designate specific times to log off and stick to them. This will create a healthy separation between work and your well-deserved downtime. Creating a cosy atmosphere at home can also help you unwind. Light some candles, put on your favourite holiday playlist, and indulge in festive treats. 🍪 🎶 Take time to engage in holiday traditions, whether it’s decorating the tree, baking cookies, or watching classic movies. These activities can help shift your mindset from work mode to holiday spirit. Don't forget to connect with loved ones! Quality time spent with family and friends is priceless. Organise a game night, enjoy a holiday feast, or simply gather around for heartwarming conversations. Remember, it's perfectly okay to step back and recharge 💜 #ChristmasSpirit #WorkLifeBalance #HolidayCheer #DisconnectToReconnect #FestiveSeason

Emotional Stages of Holiday Celebrations… Stage 1: Excitement You invite your whole family to spend the holidays with you. Don’t know what to expect, but everyone together is great, right? About 4–16 weeks to go… Stage 2: Fear Planning sort-of starts, and you have no idea why you even invited everyone to your house. About 1-4 weeks to go… Stage 3: Optimism It is going to happen and you are determined to make it work. You start drinking more coffee to help you plan. Part of you is secretly hoping to catch something that appears to be serious enough to cancel the plans, but not serious enough to spoil time with your household. In the end, you hope it is just an innocent sniffle. A few hours to 1 week to go… Stage 4: Validation Celebrations are here, and things are going well. Everyone is unique in their own way, and you are enjoying things. You are so busy, all self-care goes out the door, but you are having a good time. 30% of the celebration is over. Stage 5: Perseverence You tell your spouse you are renting an AirBNB next year for your household only, doing no gifts, and never doing this again. 30% to 100% of the celebration is over. Stage 6: Repeat Stage 1 again the following year. #satire Inspired by my conversation with David Porter.
