The NAPLAN 'success' of these schools probably owes more to neuroscience than explicit teaching. Although that's obviously a critical adjunct. And a school's fluent use of neuroscience based educational strategies is a far more relevant metric for school choice than NAPLAN results. 'Building Background Knowledge' at Fairfield West is a brilliant concept: having tangible, experience based reference points (Concrete Examples) for what I'm reading about provides cognitive context that helps to encode and store information accurately. Starting each maths lesson with a retrieval session (activating prior knowledge) at John the Baptist, St Catherine's (and many other schools) is key to moving information to long term memory and helping with fluent recall. In an ideal world these principles are a key part of teacher training and avoid the politicisation that occurs with so many educational initiatives. Even more importantly, they're taught to students themselves, empowering them to maximise their own learning.

Inequities in education start before students show up to school, with 80.2 percent of all Black kindergarteners and 83.4 percent of Black boys not ready for kindergarten. Following Black students through school, Ohio educators are TWO TIMES as likely to: ‼️Identify Black students as having an intellectual disability ‼️Place Black students with disabilities in more restrictive settings ‼️Remove Black students with disabilities from the classroom for disciplinary reasons. These trends continue throughout the education experience as 1 out of 4 Black children didn’t graduate high school in 2021.
FACT: A staggering 65% of Ohio children do not demonstrate kindergarten readiness. Learn more about the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment and how it predicts future academic success in Troy Hunter's new blog post: https://ow.ly/yW3W50QM1H6

We must not wait to invest our time, energy, talents, and care into all our children. It starts prenatally. It starts with affordable, quality healthcare, childcare, preschool, and supportive policies and programs for families. It starts, with us. One of the predictive points of success for students is being kindergarten ready- a child being ready to learn in kindergarten leads to that child being more likely to pass the 3rd grade reading guarantee, who then is more likely to pass 8th grade algebra, who then is also more likely to stay in school (high attendance) and do well academically in 9th grade, who then is more likely to graduate high school…and so on.
