It is thus literal and philosophical. ‘Ground Matters’ presents inextricable links between nature and built form, Country and architecture. It is fundamental to all architectural works, but also to basic life on earth. The material of the ground is something we all use and interact with every day, whether uncultivated, landscaped, or covered in manufactured substances. Recently, I had the opportunity to create a model of a Roman aqueduct, a true architectural marvel of the ancient world. Through this project, I gained a deeper understanding of how architecture serves as the backbone of civilization, enabling society to function efficiently while leaving a lasting cultural legacy. Roman aqueducts were not just engineering achievements; they demonstrated how thoughtful design and construction can impact daily life, providing a vital resource—water—across cities. Building this model helped me appreciate the importance of architecture in shaping human history and advancing society, from ancient times to today. I hardly knew anything about rammed earth as a material, even though I have been studying this work for 4 years so it has been nice to think about it. #EducationalArchitecture by #AGi architects. How can architecture become a tool to transform education and foster learning? This month we are bringing you our research on educational architecture, on the occasion on one of our latest projects, the #PabloPicassoSecondarySchool. The #LosbatesSchool explored how education can benefit from new learning theories which move away from traditional education towards a more transversal pedagogy. In Losbates, different spatial typologies favored different learning exchanges. We gave a name to each typology. Campfire-type spaces created places to listen and learn from a group leader. Watering hole was the name of those structures in which we learn from peers, in small informal groups. Cave was referring to spaces that allow you to isolate yourself and study or ideate, individually. Life was the name of those spaces and moments in which knowledge is tested, learning while doing, working in the workshop.

The book tackles the cycles of production, obsolescence, demolition, and waste in the built environment—a timely reflection on how we engage with architecture over time. 💡 Centered around seven key ideas—ensemble, void, reconfiguration, inside-out, traces, mirror, and nuance—it presents a rich blend of international project references, a theoretical essay, and a real-world project in Flanders. This book follows an exhibition of the same name by the Flanders Architecture Institute. For anyone passionate about architecture and adaptation, I highly recommend taking a look. The book offers fresh insights while revisiting familiar concepts in the field. In the US, even the least popular architecture programs are hundreds of times better than the best programs of the late 19th century. During the second half of the 19th century, Henry Van Brunt wrote about the general experience of studying and practicing architecture. He stated, 'The study of architecture at that time was pursued under the most discouraging conditions. The art was ill-understood and hardly respected by the public.' Van Brunt continued, 'There were few books available, and our traditions were eminently provincial. Examples of good work were so rare that our ideals of perfection were incoherent.' Today, we live in an era where knowledge is abundant and easily accessible. Renowned architects like William Robert Ware, Richard Morris Hunt, and Henry Van Brunt would be astounded by the wealth of information we have at our fingertips. This access empowers us to study and advance the field of architecture in ways they could only dream of. The challenges of the past remind us to appreciate the resources and tools we have today. As we continue to build and innovate, let's remember the foundations laid by our predecessors and use our advantages to push the boundaries of what architecture can achieve.
