There are many vocal proponents, some who will likely be positioned to influence the incoming administration, of breaking significant parts of the United States government and rebuilding with a drastically new vision in mind. https://lnkd.in/eJg6tRc2. This works with the art of Kintsugi—the art of breaking a ceramic or porcelain vessel and then putting it back together, typically with a golden seam, to create something beautiful. But what works with ceramics or porcelain is unlikely to work with government. Government institutions are much more complicated, and what is being proposed is like breaking a vase with the intent of putting the pieces back together to form a teacup (something even the best Kintsugi artist would find laughable). If these proponents are successful in breaking existing government institutions, they are likely to find, just like those who try Kintsugi for the first time, that it is a lot easier to break something than it is to repair it. My only hope is that the administration remembers the lesson of Chesterton's fence, which "is not to hold on to the past, but to ensure we understand it before moving forward." https://lnkd.in/euQn3EnV. Breaking things for the sake of breaking things is not a winning strategy any more than remodeling a home with a sledgehammer without first figuring out which walls are load-bearing is. Reform takes patience and work, but it is the smarter, prudent approach to effecting change when it comes to an entity with the complexity and impact of the federal government.
