Let's have a discussion about wheelchair accessibility in healthcare settings. DISCLAIMER: I am not a regular wheelchair user, if you are, feel free to add your own experience to this conversation. I recently had a hospital experience due to a severe sprained foot that left me unable to bear weight on it. While I am not a regular wheelchair user, I encountered some challenges that shed light on the barriers faced by individuals who rely on wheelchairs for mobility. Upon arrival at the hospital, I received assistance from a compassionate administrator and a security guard who assisted me from getting from my car to the wheelchair. However, I faced difficulties fitting through the automatic door due to the size of the wheelchair. Once I was in a room, I found it impossible to transfer from the wheelchair to a stretcher. I was met with resistance from the staff to assist me in transferring onto various stretchers within the hospital, which is likely due to a lack of protocol in regards to moving larger bodies. Furthermore, I experienced financial barriers when presented with a significant price difference for crutches tailored for larger bodies. The cost for my crutches was $140, in comparison to $20 for straight sized bodies. Additionally, the lack of appropriate medical equipment and training for accommodating individuals in larger bodies further highlighted the need for enhanced accessibility measures. Overall, my hospital experience emphasized the importance of addressing accessibility issues faced by wheelchair users. During my stay, I was met with multiple challenges due to my size, which is unacceptable. This experience has allowed me to have a better understanding of the challenges that people who use wheelchairs face and motivates me to continue to advocate for improved accommodations and support for individuals with mobility challenges in healthcare settings. Fortunately, I know how to advocate for myself and I am willing to speak up when these issues arise. This is not the case for everyone.
