The 2024 Paris Olympics/Paralympics captured our imagination … and Australia's highlights were nothing short of inspiring: • Jess Fox cementing her legacy as the most successful paddler in kayaking/canoeing history, bringing home two Gold medals • Alexa Leary’s stunning performance to win the Women's 100m freestyle S9 in world record time • Caitlin Parker making history as the first Australian woman to win an Olympic boxing medal in the W75kg category • Lauren Parker achieving a remarkable feat as Australia's first dual-sport Paralympic medallist in 44 years, securing Gold in the Paratriathlon and Women's road race H14 and Silver in the H13 individual time trial ... and there are many, many more examples on the highlights reel. … and ‘Yes’ - the medals are cause for celebration, but the real magic lies in how sport inspires; creates community, a sense of belonging, resilience, self-confidence; and forges friendships and cherished memories. So, it’s no surprise that every Olympic/Paralympic Games sparks a surge of interest in sports participation. But the real challenge for Australia’s 400+ participation sports - especially those outside the mainstream like paddling, rock climbing, lacrosse (set to debut in the 2028 LA Games) - is how to maintain and capitalize on this momentum. It is only really with a pause in racing today (there is no wind), that one has time to reflect on the enormity of what has happened over the past couple of days. On Saturday we saw Group A, so the America's Cup teams women’s teams, racing. And, not wishing to bang on about it, but this is the FIRST time that there has EVER been a women’s event in the America’s Cup! So shout out to Grant Dalton and his team for getting this off the ground! But perhaps, for me, what added to the sense that we are witnessing something special, was when Group B, so the invited teams from Canada 🇨🇦, Spain 🇪🇸, the Netherlands 🇳🇱, Germany 🇩🇪, Sweden 🇸🇪 and Australia 🇦🇺, had their first day of racing yesterday. It was really emotional, in a way more so than the previous day - these six teams have fought really hard to get here, and most have had very little time on the water and/or in the SIM to get to grips with the AC40. When we wrote the Strategic Review into Women in Sailing, the one clear message from the research of some 7000 women, was #opportunity.  The #opportunity to take part, the #opportunity to belong and the #opportunity to have a space in this sport to be able to perform at the very top level.   There is absolutely no doubt that all 12 women’s teams are relishing this platform and the #opportunity for 48 women to be part of one of the premier events in sailing, and in sport. Something that Hannah Mills eloquently reinforces in this interview with Matthew Sheahan for #PlanetSail So bring it on!  💪 Both groups are back out racing tomorrow and, with four races in each group scheduled, there is very strong competition to win a podium place in each respective group, and therefore qualify for the semi finals. And if a team in Group B were to win the Puig Women's America's Cup , then that would be a real fairy tale ending. And, as in fairy tales, anything can happen...

🚵🏽 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗚𝗕 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 36𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 🥇   I love the Olympics, every 4 years there are always stories of human sacrifice alongside the rollercoaster 🎢 of emotions and fine margins as athletes compete to win gold. 🏆   💪🏽Despite the puncture, Team GB Mountain Biker Tom Pidcock showed remarkable belief and composure to work his way back through the field and win the gold medal.   😌 His support team also did not appear to be in a panic when they had to replace his front tyre as quickly as possible. There was an element of luck (sometimes we need this too) as he was close to his "pit" when he got the puncture. What is even more impressive is that the race leader was a Frenchmen who was getting incredible support from the home crowd. This has been one of the most inspiring stories so far at the Olympics outside of the more publicised stories of athletes overcoming their demons such as that of Simone Biles and Adam Peaty (also just as inspiring!)   The pressure and expectation to perform at a single event every 4 years is an achievement in itself for these athletes.   Athletes show us the required magic formula of both 👟 physical and 🧠 mental wellbeing that underpins elite performance. ❤️ The other thing to mention here is even though these are "individual" sports they are really all team sports. There team consisting with engineers, medical staff etc. and of course families; all playing their part.   So much to think about and learn from these athletes in our own careers and personal lives. Team Netherlands' Performance at the Olympic Games in France is mindblowing. Our athletes have won an impressive 21 medals so far! 🥇🥈🥉 TeamNL are currently 9th in overal standing (based on golden medals). Let's a have a data driven look to it: This achievement is remarkable if comparing with countries of similar size. 📊 Some facts: > The Netherlands currently has 10 gold, 5 silver, and 6 bronze medals (tonight 2 extra gold medals are realistic). > This translates to approximately 1.17 medals per million inhabitants, an impressive ratio compared to other (larger) countries. > Despite this we are not the "champions". That place has been in strong hands of Australia with a mesmerizing 1.65 medals/million inhabitants. For me these figures highlight the efficiency and effectiveness of our national sports program and the dedication of our athletes and coaches. With only 18 million people achieving such a result is exceptional. About half of all #Olympic and #Paralympic hopefuls have never received any compensation related to their sport, according to a Commission on the State of US Olympics & Paralympics survey of 648 elite athletes. 26.5% of the surveyed athletes had a total income of less than $15k per year, and another study from the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee found 59% of #Olympic hopefuls make less than $25k during Olympic years.
