Of course I am biased, but I'd go for having "Boots on the Ground", rather than assigning a Distributor, any day of the week. While your troops are out there fighting for you, too many Distributors take orders at best, or sleep at worst. 🌏 I am fortunate to work with local sales teams, respectively their managers. On the other side, I also work with a lot of overseas heads of APAC, their methods and expectations. 🔦 Here is where I have noticed that an outsider's view can be a tremendous asset in an international business' development: 💡 I have noticed on several occasions that the local teams have ideas (often very good ones) and suggestions (often very right ones) that they are holding back because they simply assume that they will not be paid attention to or, worse, not be appreciated by overseas management anyway. That is usually the case when the numbers lag significantly behind plans. 🔥 What often happens then is that the directly responsible manager overseas (who is in many cases themselves quite cautious of not being crucified by the top) puts even more pressure and "training" on local teams - with often devastating effect. 👈👇👆👉 The disconnect between local teams and overseas headquarters is certainly one of the biggest obstacles to developing foreign businesses in Asia (and most likely everywhere else). 🍚🥢 I have often been accused (albeit with beautiful wording) by overseas directors of being "too localized," meaning I seemingly have more affinity for local customs than for the strategic objectives designed by headquarters far away. 😵💫 Needless to say, that is a very shortsighted point of view.
