Storm preparation is a vital aspect of owning a coastal property. We recommend that property owners review their insurance policies annually to ensure they are up to date and provide adequate coverage. It's especially important to do this around the start of hurricane season. Having all your insurance information readily available before a storm hits is crucial since no changes can be made to policies once a storm is named. Great points in this post with Robert Hartwig, PhD, CPCU and Russ Banham! Mitigation and resiliency are the only real ways to reduce risk and manage rising insurance premiums as demonstrated in #AlabamaStrong. Oklahoma’s new incentive program administered by Oklahoma Insurance Department is a fantastic step forward, and to supercharge it in the coming years, we could add tax-free disaster savings/mitigation accounts, sales tax free day on mitigation material purchases and promote endorsements that rebuild standard homes to #Fortified standards after a loss. These tools could help homeowners strengthen their properties faster while keeping costs down. On the flip side, a government-run reinsurance program is a dangerous idea. Just look at Texas’s wind pool—it’s a clear example of political pressure overriding actuarial data and leaving taxpayers to bail it out. Let’s stick to market-driven solutions that empower homeowners and reward risk reduction instead. Also… spicy margaritas forever. 🌶️🍹 Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety - IBHS #Insurance #OklahomaStrong #FortifiedHomes #RiskReduction #Resilience #DisasterPreparedness #MitigationMatters #NoToReinsurance
Enjoyed interviewing economist Bob Hartwig recently about natural disaster risks for people, businesses and insurers, especially following his own family’s brush with Hurricane Helene. #disasters #hurricanes #insurance
