In La Libertad region of #Peru, one of the main challenges in ensuring effective environmental management has traditionally been the limited capacity of public servants to interpret and apply complex environmental regulations and legal provisions. In partnership with regional authorities, MEGAM Peru Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, has supported institutional improvements and investments in human capital to strengthen environmental inspection and supervision functions. The Government of La Libertad is now using MEGAM's experience to boost civil servants' capacity in other areas of service delivery and regulation. Before any major project can begin, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) must be conducted. This process helps identify potential environmental effects and ensures that measures are taken to mitigate any negative impacts. For instance, the construction of the Gautrain involved extensive EIAs to minimize its environmental footprint. 🚆 These assessments considered the impact on local wildlife, water resources, and communities. As a result, the project implemented measures like wildlife crossings and sound barriers to reduce its environmental impact. At Xuba and Associates, we guide our clients through the EIA process, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and fostering sustainable development. EIAs also provide a platform for public participation, ensuring that the voices of affected communities are heard. This democratic process helps balance development needs with environmental protection. If you have a project that needs an EIA, let Xuba and Associates assist you in navigating the process. #EIA #law #SustainableDevelopment #GreenSouthAfrica #lawfirm

Could this Inter American Court ruling apply in the UK, Europe, and elsewhere? The human right of a healthy environment could see transport, infrastructure, minerals, farming, and water management sectors in the Dock. We need clarification on society's definition of a healthy environment. What do you believe makes a healthy environment? #Sustainability #Environment #Communities #Definition #Clarity #HumanRights
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights handed down a landmark decision on Friday, March 22, in a case involving allegations that more than a century of catastrophic industrial pollution from La Oroya Metallurgical Complex in Peru violated the right to a healthy environment. UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment David Boyd has written an essay on the judgment for Global Network for the Study of Human Rights and the Environment (GNHRE). The decision is currently only in Spanish, so it is the Special Rapporteur's hope this essay will help a wider audience appreciate the importance of the decision. Please find his essay here:

❗ First published on apaguyana.com ❗ Written with the #AmerindianPeoplesAssociation and Rainforest Foundation US The voluntary carbon market has come under intense scrutiny over concerns around the #environmental and #social #integrity of the #carboncredits being sold. Even certification bodies are seemingly incapable of delivering on their promise to certify “high-integrity” credits. The certification of jurisdictional REDD+ carbon credits by the Architecture for REDD+ Transactions (ART) to the Government of Guyana (GoG) in December 2022 provides an important case study on the challenges facing the high-integrity carbon market. 🌍 **Exciting Developments in Puntland's Environmental Governance!** 🌿 As the Minister of Environment, Range, and Climate Change, I am thrilled to announce the approval and implementation of the revised Puntland Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Act (ESIA), effective since December 20, 2023. This pivotal legislation underlines our commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship in Puntland. **Why is this important?** The ESIA Act is crucial as it sets a structured framework for assessing the environmental and social impacts of developmental projects. Ensuring that these assessments are thorough and standardized is key to protecting our natural resources and ensuring the well-being of our communities. **For Firms and Individual Experts:** Compliance with the ESIA Act is now mandatory for conducting environmental assessments in Puntland. Interested parties are required to secure an ESIA license by submitting the necessary documentation, including individual CVs for experts and organizational profiles for firms. This process not only enhances the integrity of environmental assessments but also aligns with our vision to foster a transparent, accountable, and environmentally responsible development landscape. For further details or to apply for an ESIA license, please contact the ministry through our official communication channels. Let's work together for a sustainable and prosperous Puntland! #EnvironmentalGovernance #SustainableDevelopment #Puntland #Somalia #ESIAAct2023

FORWARD-LOOK AT GRID-ARENDAL In October Scanteam finalised its study called “A forward-looking end-term review of GRID-Arendal’s cooperation with Norad”. It was an important study, not least because the organisation now has the challenge to replace the large framework funding from Norad and seek viable alternatives. A main task for Scanteam was to give advice on these options and the way forward. GRID-Arendal is a non-profit environmental communications centre in Norway, which transforms environmental data into innovative, science-based information and provides capacity-building to enable improved environmental governance. Its strength is to bridge science and action. GRID-Arendal was established in 1989 by the Norwegian Environment Ministry to support environmentally sustainable development by collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other partners. It is part of UNEP’s Global Resource Information Database (GRID) Centres Network, which is a network of environmental data and information centres. The review team analysed the efficiency of funds from the Norad Grant Agreement 2021-2024 and further resource mobilisation that have given more outcomes than what could be expected only by the Norad funding. The report is discussing GRID-Arendal’s existing and new comparative advantages in a situation without the Norad Grant, considering new partnerships and opportunities for global capacity building in the environmental area, as well as opportunities for participation in competitive calls. The report gives recommendations both to GRID-Arendal and Norad. #Evaluation #UNEP #GRID-Arendal #Norad

The pace of environmental consulting is fast, and you can’t communicate all the subtleties you can in a thesis. You have to make decisions about what is most important to communicate and do it concisely." See what else Elizabeth Haack, our Director of Assessment and Senior Environmental Scientist, had to say when she sat down with Epistimi.org to talk about leadership as a woman in environmental consulting.
