🌐 Pakistan's Stance on the Israel-Palestine Conflict: Advocacy, Policy, and Global Implications At the recent Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit in Riyadh, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and leaders from over 50 nations voiced deep concern over the crisis in Gaza and Lebanon, urging immediate international action. Pakistan’s advocacy for Palestinian rights was a central theme, with a focus on humanitarian relief, accountability, and a lasting two-state solution. 🇵🇰 Key outcomes from the summit: ➡️ Unified Stance: Arab and Islamic leaders called for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and an end to Israel’s blockade of Gaza. ➡️ Demand for Accountability: Leaders advocated for accountability in response to alleged human rights violations and proposed reviewing Israel’s UN membership. ➡️ Push for Palestinian Statehood: Strong support was expressed for an independent Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on pre-1967 borders. Africa continues to be plagued by conflicts that hinder its progress. The African Union (AU) has made strides in addressing these issues, but several ongoing conflicts demand greater international attention and a more robust response. One key conflict is the Tigray Conflict in Ethiopia, which has resulted in widespread human rights violations, including mass displacement and famine. The AU should facilitate inclusive dialogue between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan leaders and push for unrestricted humanitarian access to affected areas. In the Sahel region, particularly Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, extremist violence and political instability have led to mass displacement and undermined governance. The AU must strengthen the G5 Sahel Joint Force, seek greater support from international allies, and focus on local development and education initiatives to address the root causes of extremism. South Sudan remains fragile despite a peace agreement in 2018, with intermittent violence and a looming humanitarian crisis. The AU should prioritize the full implementation of the peace deal and support efforts to rebuild the nation's infrastructure. Additionally, establishing a truth and reconciliation commission could help address the deep-seated grievances fueling the conflict. Libya's civil war has drawn in multiple foreign actors, complicating efforts to reach a peaceful resolution. The AU must take a more assertive role in mediating between the warring factions, advocating for the withdrawal of foreign mercenaries, and supporting the United Nations' peace process. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to suffer from violence, particularly in the eastern provinces, where armed groups terrorize civilians. The AU should lead efforts to disarm these groups and address the illegal exploitation of the region's resources, which fuels the conflict. To address these conflicts effectively, the African Union should strengthen regional collaboration, enhance conflict early warning systems, promote inclusive governance, and mobilize international support. The path to peace in Africa requires a concerted effort led by the AU, with the full backing of the international community.
