As an actor, I’ve had the opportunity to improvise in several films, and I've seen firsthand how powerful improvisation can be. When directors encourage improvisation, it often leads to more natural and realistic performances. Improvisation allows actors to react genuinely to the moment, bringing an authentic and spontaneous quality to the dialogue that scripted lines sometimes can't achieve. One of the key benefits of improvisation is that it enables actors to explore their characters more deeply. This exploration can result in unexpected and compelling interactions that resonate more with audiences. Directors who embrace improvisation recognize that it can enhance the storytelling by adding layers of authenticity and emotional depth. In my experience, some of the most memorable and impactful scenes arise from those moments when actors are given the freedom to improvise. It creates a dynamic environment where creativity thrives, and the collaboration between actors and directors reaches new heights. For fellow actors, I encourage you to embrace improvisation when the opportunity arises. Trust your instincts, stay present, and allow yourself to be fully immersed in the scene. The results can be truly remarkable, often leading to performances that are both genuine and profoundly engaging.
We all know Robin Williams improvised a lot of dialogue in his films. Aladdin being one of the most famous examples. Apparently Robin did a variety of scenes in this with different improvised dialogue each time they filmed. Some improve being so unfiltered they could have released an R rated cut of the movie. Just imagine.
I love improv. There's such a feeling of accomplishment with it. I don't know why...but I feel so confident after an improv session.
Story to be told: Director, Barry Levinson, told Mr. Williams not to improve for Good Morning Vietnam as he thought the script was just right. Day one of shooting, early on, Robin started off script, Barry said cut and sent everyone home. Robin got the hint. No Doubt (pun intended) Robin was genius actor and comedian but script like Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society and Good Wil hunting were stand alone just right.
