The True Measure of Victory People often measure a winner by speed, strength, or the number of trophies they collect. However, the true measure of a winner lies in their selflessness and genuine humanity. A powerful example of this is the story of Spanish Olympic runner Iván Fernández and his Kenyan competitor, Abel Mutai. As Mutai neared the finish line in a race, he became confused by the signage and mistakenly stopped, believing he had already won. Fernández, close behind, had the perfect opportunity to overtake Mutai and claim victory. But instead of seizing the moment, Fernández chose a different path—he began shouting at Mutai to continue running. When Mutai, unable to understand Spanish, remained confused, Fernández did something extraordinary: he guided Mutai to the finish line, allowing him to win the race that was rightfully his. When asked by a journalist why he had done this, Iván Fernández’s response was simple yet profound: "My dream is that someday we can create a society where we push and help each other to win." The journalist, still incredulous, pressed further, questioning why Fernández would let the Kenyan win when he could have easily claimed victory himself. Fernández replied with integrity, "I didn’t let him win; he was going to win. The race was his." When the journalist persisted, pointing out that Fernández could have won, Iván responded, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What honor would there be in that medal? What would my mother think of that?" Fernández’s actions are a powerful reminder of the values that should guide our lives. In a world that often celebrates winning at all costs, he chose fairness, integrity, and decency over personal gain. His story challenges us to reflect on the values we pass on to the next generation. Are we teaching them that victory is the only thing that matters, no matter how it's achieved? Or are we instilling in them the beauty of helping others, even at the cost of personal success? In the end, honesty, ethics, and compassion are the true measures of success. Let’s pass on these values, showing our children that there is more to winning than crossing the finish line first—it's about how we run the race and lift others along the way. #mohamed #value #dignity #victory
