When I teach a class on Italian #design the first assignment for students is: “design an original chair”, or “design an original lamp” (I sometimes add “design an original bottle”). The more common the object, the more difficult it is to find in it a novel form.   Here is always a great starting point to find inspiration (and learn first hand about a leading obsession of 20th century Italian design)…   Three masterpieces from Gae Aulenti's first decade as interior #designer. 1)   The Sgarsul (“street urchin”) Rocking chair for Poltronova in 1962 2)   the Pipistrello (“bat”) table lamp for Olivetti in 1965 3)   the Pileino (“small battery”) lamp for Artemide in 1972.   Not as easy as it seems!
