The best advice!

“Disconnect to connect.” Such a simple action that can change how you connect with others.

Digital notifications trigger a release of dopamine, creating a sense of anticipation and addiction, leading people to close check their phones compulsively in anticipation of new notifications. (Santa Maria College). We're all familiar with the lesson learned about going on a date with someone who is constantly checking their phone. Their actions show how important, or unimportant, we are to them. However, we often treat others we value the same when in different social settings. We pause while having discussions with team members at work, and maybe even at home. Have we simply developed a habit of simply checking notifications? The sender of the message we're checking deserves our best. And so do the people in front of us. Let's make a change, and give everyone our best!

Small aspects of nonverbal communication matter a lot.

It’s the little things that can be very powerful.

This video shows up in my feed a lot and I love to watch it each and every single time it does. I’m guilty for being a people watcher. I’d watch people’s behaviors and mannerisms all the time. As a kid, I had limited understanding of what it all meant though. When I was in college taking dance classes, I studied how to connect basic movement patterns and body postures to behaviors and emotions to tell a story or portray a character. (Yeah, there’s more to dance than just being able to do pretty jumps and leaps and wearing pretty costumes 😉) This was when I started to dive in and understand the psychology behind movement and recognize behaviors. Then during my life & health coach certification, I was shown how to take these body languages and manifested behaviors and listen for the unspoken messages/truths and the story behind them. This fills in the gaps where everything now makes sense, who this person is, what they are doing and why they are doing it. Actions do speak louder than words. And the truth and message behind those actions speak even louder. Observe what you do or what others do when interacting. The message conveyed by leaving your phone out of sight during a meeting is powerful: Undivided Attention: It signals that you are fully present and giving the other person your complete focus. Respect and Value: It shows that you value the person's time and consider the interaction important enough to warrant your full attention. Prioritizing Connection: It demonstrates a commitment to genuine human connection, putting aside distractions to engage in meaningful conversation. This simple act can significantly enhance the quality of your interactions and leave a lasting positive impression on the people you meet with.

This is so true! There is something about a phone on the table or in someone's hand, that just takes some of the attention away from the conversation and leaves the other person feeling like they are not important enough. I have been guilty of putting my phone on the table in meetings, with the cover on so that I dont see messages coming in. But listening to Simon here just reminds me that even when I am in meetings (both virtual and in-person) with people, and their phones are visible, it does make me feel like they are wanting to be somewhere else. I am always challenged to lead in a better way, and am challenged to change my behaviour in this respect. So I challenge us all, as leaders, that when you are in a meeting with someone / some people, to leave you phone in your bag and give your full attention to the people in that (virtual / physical) room. #AuthenticLeadership #LeadingByExample #BeConnectedInConversation #DisconnectToConnect

Simon Sinek brings up a wonderful point that we hear all the time, yet none of us seem to heed--the need to disconnect in order to connect. I've been in so many meetings where I'm not paying enough attention because I am multi-tasking with emails or chats (and let's be honest, does that really work?), and then I'm missing the entire point of the meeting. 😕 I've started going to my 1:1s with my leader without my laptop, and often try to leave my phone behind as well. This helps me actually focus on what we are talking about, and not get distracted by more emails/chats (which we all know will still be there in 30 minutes). 💻 At home, I try to put my phone away during meals so that I can better connect with my partner. I also turn off/ignore notifications in the evening so I'm not making myself dread the next work day. 📱 Do you make the time to disconnect?
