The unknowns in President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation promises are understandably causing apprehension for some students applying for financial aid. And even though data from Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is protected from any use outside of awarding financial aid, there’s no guarantee of protection. School counselors hope students will take the risk and apply anyway.

FAFSA ALERT: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA, officially opened Thursday for students seeking financial aid for college during the 2025-2026 school year. This is overseen by the Department of Education. How much will financial aid be affected if the Dept of Education is reduced or eliminated? If you know a student, please advise them that it would be best to apply as soon as possible.

The answer is you won't know, exactly, how much aid you qualify for until you officially apply. But you can get an idea ahead of time. The federal government has an online tool called the FAFSA4caster that you can complete to see if you might qualify for financial aid. Then at college time, you can fill out the government's official aid application, the FAFSA, which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
