When it Comes to the US Elections and AI-augmented Disinformation, Don't Believe Everything You See, Hear or Read Can genAI be the difference maker in close elections? According to recently published research (see: https://lnkd.in/enPy2MPA), genAI could be the factor that tips the scales in otherwise close races. Local and state election officials are currently combating genAI-powered misinformation threats from various AI tools like DALL-E and ChatGPT, while foreign-state sponsored operatives create false narratives about political candidates hoping to fool any "tools" in the voting public that is easily influenced in their echo chambers by this activity. Amidst the rising challenges posed by genAI-disinformation, it's crucial to be vigilant as a voter. State and local election websites offer reliable information, and numerous fact-checking organizations provide tools to verify election-related content. And if you think this is bad in 2024, it will only get worse in the future -- especially if it is the difference maker these disinfo networks hope it will be. This writeup addresses a key question that doesn't come up too often in reports on election misinformation/disinformation: What's the motivation behind it? It's not just bipartisan attacks or adversarial governments fomenting chaos--it's also often simply motivated by money. The tech companies that enable the spread of misinformation (and these days play a role in generating it) have the power to deplatform, or at least demonetize, users spreading misinformation, yet too often they choose not to. In fact, the companies themselves continue to benefit from viral content, regardless of whether it's true or not.

There is a growing dissatisfaction among electorates in Nigeria and across Africa due to irregularities in the conduct of elections, including inciting violence and intimidation of opponents before, during, and after the electoral process.
