amazing solution nature and innovative architecture perfectly blended...

I usually spend a few minutes each day scrolling through The Architect's Newspaper - typically marveling at the latest architectural sculpture gracing the landing page. More often than not, that image happens to be a graceful and elegant high rise in a major US city; the building resplendent with terraces and rooftops of overflowing plants, tropical flowering trees, and happy picnickers lounging under mature canopy trees - all set within an idyllic "Park in the Sky". While I do not fault these ambitions, I do think there is a slight injustice by us designers when we so overtly over represent the reality of these spaces in our visualizations. Is a hyper realistic and oversimplified graphic necessarily the answer? No, but neither is an over indexed image showing +20' tall trees set within a shallow beam structure. As a landscape architect, I always tell my clients and collaborators YES! Let's do it! But I also am very open and transparent that there are implications of doing such. I think we've all been spell bound by the razzle dazzle of a slick and sexy architectural graphic, but I can't help but think that if we started representing projects more accurately from the beginning, we would end up with much more compelling realities. Natural materials for space architecture, like wood or even "regolith-clay" plaster, were the subject of my white paper for the decadal survey of the space architecture comunity. I am convinced that life in space will require living materials. Not only because we can grow them in space, but also because they meet the mental and emotional needs of our lives, which are undeniably enhanced by the use of wood in interiors. 🌱🌍🚀 Wood creates: - a calming appearance 🧘♂️ - an antiseptic surface 🧼 - a highly durable finish 🛠️ - easy to install and modify 🔧 And there’s so much more to say about wood! Of course, there are many challenges, but I believe these can be overcome, thanks to the people I've discussed this topic with.
