November is a particularly poignant time for me personally. As a serving Army Officer, it is the pivotal month that we come together to mark and remember the sacrifices made by those in the Service of our country. This cannot and should not be overshadowed. It is also Movember; a light hearted way to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues, with a focus on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. Again, an extremely worthy cause with life saving consequences. However, what most people do not realise, myself included until last year, is that November is also Lung Cancer Awareness Month #LCAM. Lung Cancer claims more lives than breast, pancreatic and prostate cancer put together and is a threat to anyone with lungs, not just those who smoke. As a 40ish year old non-smoker, I was not aware that lung cancer was a threat to me personally until I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic (incurable) Non Small Cell Lung Cancer last November! Since then, my knowledge has drastically improved and I am spending time learning about this disease due to necessity! However, if I had been more aware that this was a threat to me, I may have gone to the GP sooner last year and I might have been diagnosed earlier and at a curable point. Equally, when I visited A&E with acute signs and symptoms of lung cancer, I might have received enhanced imaging which would have diagnosed me earlier if the health workers and the procedures they are made to follow hadn’t screened me out because I wasn’t a smoker, despite having previously had cancer as well as a letter explaining this from my Primary Healthcare Doctor requesting the enhanced imaging. 😳 Don’t be me!! Understand that Lung Cancer doesn’t discriminate on smoking history - you just need lungs to get it!! Understand the signs and symptoms; advocate for yourself and your family members if needed and take the time to watch the video below. In addition, please consider sharing it with your networks and bringing lung cancer into the conversation, maybe even as part of Movember discussion in your work places. Greater awareness and discussion can only be positive for us all, will drive much needed change and hopefully save lives in the future. Thank you. #LCAM
