When it comes to foster care, this is literally the only innovation to the program that makes any sense. With violent and often mentally unstable youth ending up in foster care due to state legislation, this is the least the state can do. Let’s not wait until they are homeless and addicted to drugs or trafficked to support intervention services. If First 5 funds the Effective Parenting Initiative to offer early intervention to parents, let’s not sideline the importance of adopting intervention as a strategy!

Mixed income housing models are not just about the integration of various income levels or rent levels. They create space for the preservation of community assets, encourage diversification of neighbourhoods across all demographic groups, and encourage residents to become more actively engaged in their own advocacy - and advocacy for future generations. We’ve seen that diverse communities thrive and it’s important that we use National Housing Day, and every other day, to get more creative about how to meet the housing need in our country. Have a conversation with your friends, family, write to your politicians, engage with local housing organizations, ask your neighbours, build your network in a way that honours communities built to serve. That’s how we can all make a difference. #nationalhousingday #housingisahumanright

Interesting read 📚
Ofsted has published new research into children’s experiences of living in social care settings in England. The research sets out the results from a survey of 6,995 children and young people about settings including children’s homes, foster care and residential special schools. Findings show: nearly all children who responded said they felt safe where they live or stay; 91% reported that they get along with staff or carers ‘always’ or ‘most of the time’; and children living in supported accommodation were least likely to spend time with the people who are important to them.

"Housing matters. Stop stigmatizing." Housing is more than just a roof over your head—it's a foundation for stability, security, and opportunity. Yet, stigma surrounding affordable housing continues to create barriers for those who need it most. 🌟 Why It Matters: ▪️ Stigma can deter communities from supporting affordable housing initiatives. ▪️ It often unfairly labels residents, impacting their social and economic mobility. ▪️ Housing should be viewed as a right, not a privilege, for everyone. 🛠️ What Can Be Done: ▪️ Education: Raise awareness about the realities of affordable housing and its benefits. ▪️ Advocacy: Support policies that reduce stigma and promote inclusivity. ▪️ Community Engagement: Foster open dialogues to dispel myths and build support. How can we all contribute to breaking down the stigma around housing? Share your thoughts below! #publichousingagencies #affordablehousing #housing #government

In 2021, it was estimated that 77 percent of eligible youth in foster care aged 14 to 21 left care without receiving federally funded services to prepare them for adulthood and independent living. Providing preventative and supportive care to foster youth can significantly reduce the number of them who become involved in the criminal justice system and experience homelessness after emancipation. Yet more research (this time from Centre for Social Impact UNSW) finds Housing First works... "New research has found a community-based housing program for people transitioning out of homelessness has been overwhelmingly successful in keeping a safe roof over their heads, while also improving health and employment outcomes and reducing contact with the criminal justice system. Notably, 85.8% of the 380 clients in Sydney remained in stable housing three years after the program began. There were reported improvements in employment (a 2.6% increase) and education (a 2.3% increase), a greater sense of autonomy, and fewer interactions with the criminal justice system." StreetSmart targets funding into Housing First programs, often providing flexible brokerage and emergency relief to support people into tenancies and to retain tenancies. We have also funded assertive outreach and registry weeks as a first point of contact with people experiencing chronic homelessness. #homelessness #endhomelessness #housingfirst #housingcrisis #outreach #brokerage #philanthropy

We MUST not become insensitive to what is unaceptible. We effectivelly address homeleness by CREATING JOBS with LIVABLE WAGES. The federal minumum wage if $17,000 per years is immoral. A LIFE WITH DIGNITY to all people is sustained with LIVABLE WAGES and job creation. #jobcreation #livablewages
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded over $1 million to nearly two dozen public housing agencies across more than 15 states to combat homelessness among young adults transitioning out of foster care. Through the Foster Youth to Independence program, the funding aims to provide housing stability, education, counseling, and supportive services to vulnerable youth aged 18-25. Established in 2019, the program has helped administer over 5,000 housing vouchers, supporting young people in creating stable and self-sufficient futures. https://lnkd.in/g6bizrxG

Loss of housing or housing instability is a major stressor for families. In these circumstances, young children may experience a variety of challenges related to health, nutrition, learning, and development. Director Khari M. Garvin’s Home at Head Start video series highlights the many ways our programs are equipped to support young children and families experiencing housing loss or instability. In this short video, Director Garvin shares how family service professionals can initiate caring conversations about McKinney-Vento eligibility. He also provides practical examples of how small language changes can make a big difference. The tools featured in this resource are helpful for all staff to support a welcoming environment. As the Jefferson County Head Start Policy Council Chairperson, I am committed to adopting these inclusive terms. I recognize that my language can unintentionally harm others, and I choose to make a difference by listening to those affected and changing my words accordingly. Inclusion isn’t hard; making someone feel like they belong is worth it! #HeadStart #HomeAtHeadStart #HealthEquity #HousingStability #InclusiveLanguage #CommunitySupport #EarlyChildhoodEducation #McKinneyVento #ChildDevelopment #FamilySupport #InclusionMatters https://acf.mobi/3QNG43t
