On this **International Day of Democracy**, we are reminded of the power that true democracy holds in shaping a just, inclusive, and peaceful world. At WERA Association, we believe that democracy is not just about institutions—it’s about people. It’s about creating spaces where every voice is heard, every right is protected, and every individual, regardless of their background or gender, has the opportunity to thrive. As we continue our work to uplift women, youth, and marginalized communities, today serves as a call to action. Let us all be stewards of democracy, advocating for systems that reflect equality, justice, and respect for all. Together, we can create a world where democracy is not just an idea but a lived reality for everyone. 🌍✊ #InternationalDemocracyDay #GenderEquality #WERA #YouthForDemocracy #GlobalPeace

Meet Dayanna Palmar Uriana, one of the 2024 VIP Lab Fellows researching how power inequalities impact violence. Dayanna's project explores the discrimination faced by Wayuu indigenous women living in Colombia and Venezuela. Discrimination related to issues of identity, education, participation in public and political life, and access to human rights creates a landscape of violence, manifesting as gender-based violence, territorial violence, spiritual violence, and poverty. This research examines the situation of indigenous women within the framework of human rights, women's rights, and the rights of indigenous peoples, centering the collective voice of the Wayuu people in the investigation to transform inequitable power dynamics and generate solutions aligned with the Wayuu women's own vision. #Peacebuilding #Changemakers #Colombia #Venezuela #HumanRights

Every year on 10 December, the world observes Human Rights Day, a day dedicated to honouring the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. This groundbreaking document remains a cornerstone in the global effort to uphold dignity, freedom, and equality for all. The 2024 theme, "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now," emphasises the urgency of addressing human rights challenges in real time, mobilising collective action to counter hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation while reinvigorating a global commitment to justice and equity. This day holds special significance as it also marks the conclusion of the #16DaysOfActivism against Gender-Based Violence, connecting the global fight for human rights with efforts to End Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG). Women’s rights, as fundamental human rights, encompass the freedom to live without violence, access education, own property, and participate fully in society. Yet, systemic denial of these rights persists, particularly against women and girls who face gender-based violence and discrimination. Celebrating Human Rights Day reminds us of the importance of inclusivity, equality, and justice in building a sustainable future. By committing to protect and promote human rights, we pave the way for a world where everyone can live with dignity and freedom. Our rights shape our future, and the time to act is now. These days I have been talking and discussing male Allies for women’s rights in Afghanistan and whenever this discussion comes up, I remember a question posed by a male manager of a women's NGO in Nangarhar: “If the Taliban can convince boys and men to explode themselves, taking not others lives but also their own, why can't we convince men to support women's rights, which is also for their benefit?” This question highlights a profound and critical issue that requires an in-depth discussion and analysis from all angles. - Haven’t we been able to create a proper narrative for mind shift? - Haven’t we been able to create education, awareness and exposure about the importance of women’s access to their basic rights as equal human beings? - Haven’t we been able to create effective community engagements and grassroots mobilization? What else, there must be more, that we haven’t done well, please share.

Today, we celebrate the power and potential of girls around the world on this International Day of the Girl! This year’s theme emphasizes the critical importance of amplifying girls' voices in shaping a sustainable future. While progress has been made, we must take intentional steps to ensure girls not only have opportunities but also the meaningful engagement they deserve—moving beyond tokenism to genuine participation. At SAEDI Consulting, we are committed to empowering girls by actively involving them in our Stakeholder Engagement Activities, collaborating with women and girl-focused civil society organizations globally. We believe that addressing the gendered needs of girls is essential to designing and implementing key development projects worldwide—tackling critical issues such as period poverty and food insecurity that many girls face. We see girls not only as leaders of tomorrow but as active, participating members of their communities today. Together, we must stand side by side with girls, championing their rights and ensuring their voices guide us toward a brighter, more equitable future! 💪💚 #InternationalDayoftheGirl #EmpowerGirls #SustainableFuture #GirlsVoicesMatter #SAEDIconsulting #GirlLeaders2024
