The majority of funders will require you to demonstrate your ‘skin in the game’! Not literally! They don’t really want to see bruised and scraped knees or elbows! Rather, they want to know that you are invested in the project you are asking them to fund! They ask for this in a couple of ways, one of which is contributions. Contributions fall into two main categories – cash and in-kind. These can then be divided into – yours and someone else’s. Cash is pretty clear – how many $$$ will you kick into your project. Cash contributions may also come from others outside your organisation and may include other grants, sponsorships or borrowed funds. In-kind is a great way for community organisations to show they have ‘skin in the game’. In-kind includes donated labour and materials. Usually at a set $$ rate. In-kind is usually limited to a percentage of the overall project budget. Always check out the grant guidelines for information on what contributions are eligible.
