In the early 2000s, five Iowa moms connected after each lost a daughter to stillbirth or infant death. Out of this grew Healthy Birth Day, founded on the belief that stillbirths and poor birth outcomes can be preventable. Their Count the Kicks program teaches expectant parents the method for tracking fetal movement during the third trimester of pregnancy. Research shows this program has led to a more than 30% reduction in Iowa’s stillbirth rate since the program launched in 2008. Kristi stopped by Healthy Birth Day, Inc. to catch up with CEO Emily Price earlier this month. Here is the deal, Pregnancy isn't easy! Studies show us that the energy expenditure of pregnancy is akin to running a 40 week marathon. They found that the highest metabolic rate humans can handle is 2.5 times their resting metabolic rate. During pregnancy we function at 2.2 times our resting metabolic rate...for months! So the first piece is to give yourself a little grace and know that you are doing a lot just growing that human being." So proud to announce that together with Footprints Baby Loss Twin & Triplet Support, The TAPS Support Foundation has launched a position paper on the role of peer support in multiple pregnancy. This idea was developed with Suzie Scofield and Sharon Darke, when we both realised there was niche that needed to be filled urgently. Multiple births are rare, and add in the additional risks and complications that are part of this type of pregnancy, or in the cases where there is a loss in the pregnancy, it can really be challenging to find relevant support. This is where peer support networks can be a valuable lifeline, providing support and guidance from the perspective of the "ervaringsdeskundige" - the expert by experience. Peer support is not a replacement for medical care, but rather a complement to it that can give patients the added support from those with lived experience. Medical professionals should be aware of evidence based groups and networks, and build up relationships with them to ensure quality information. Did you know? Globally, about 13.4 million babies are born too soon each year. Every baby born before the completion of 37 weeks of pregnancy is considered preterm. Preterm birth is further categorised as: late preterm: babies born between 32 and 37 weeks of pregnancy very preterm: babies born between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy extremely preterm: babies born before 28 weeks of pregnancy   The earlier a baby is born, the more intensive care they require, and the more likely adverse health outcomes and life-long disabilities become. That is why they need extra special care throughout the newborn period and their childhood to reach their full potential. The Birth and Motherhood Collective draws on practices/tools of hypnobirthing and provides holistic support that genuinely centres you by holding space with and for you as you prepare for your pre-conception, pregnancy, birth and mothering journeys. Introducing the Cuppa and Chat Sessions What is it? One to one support in your pre-conception, pregnancy, birth and mothering journeys. In these sessions I can hold space with and for you to explore any questions and options to suppoty your decision making.   Whose it for? These sessions are for you if you would like to explore your pre-conception, pregnancy, birth and mothering journeys with a specific topic/issue in a 1-1 session from the comfort of your own home.    Topics we could discuss, but not limited to; birth plan reviews, relaxation work, release work on fears, worries or concerns, birth reflection, postpartum support options and planning, abortion support and care, mothering  - it is your session to ask away.   What does it involve?
