Does Cold Water Make a Difference in Evaporative Cooling Systems for Poultry Production? This summer, I came across an advertisement for a water cooler with an ice box on top, which got me wondering: Does using colder water really make a difference in cooling efficiency? The short answer is—no, it doesn't have a significant impact. In poultry farming, we often rely on cooling pads to regulate the temperature inside poultry houses. Typically, farmers don't pay much attention to the water temperature used in these cooling pads, as it is usually close to the ambient temperature before circulation. Recently, there’s been some buzz on social media about using cold water for better cooling in these systems. However, based on my experience, this approach doesn’t offer substantial benefits and could actually waste energy. Here’s why: Evaporation is the key process behind cooling. Water can turn into vapor even at temperatures below its boiling point because some water molecules possess enough kinetic energy to break free from the surface. During this process, the energy absorbed by the water molecules to overcome their cohesive forces of the hydrogen bonding between the molecules is what creates the cooling effect—not the temperature of the water itself. In fact, when water is colder, it has less molecular kinetic energy, which means it requires more time to gain molecular kinetic energy to evaporate. This slows down the evaporation process, and therefore, the cooling effect isn’t necessarily enhanced. Ultimately, it’s the energy absorbed by water molecules to break the hydrogen bonding between molecules, not the water’s initial temperature—that plays the most crucial role in producing a cooling effect.
