A threatened strike by ILA union dock workers could cripple transport of goods in the East Coast, leading to another round of supply chain disruptions and inflation. It will affect businesses all over the country. Other unions could strike in solidarity affecting the West Coast as well. It is already affecting shipping as shippers alter delivery locations or rush to get ships unloaded ahead of the strike. It should be front-page news ahead of Trump's latest shenanigans. What is the White House and Secretary of Transportation doing about it? It seems that they will have to step in as a shut down of ports creates a national security crisis. U.S. dockworkers at ports along the East and Gulf Coasts have launched their first major strike in decades after failing to reach a labor agreement by the Oct. 1 deadline. The United States Maritime Alliance and the International Longshoremen’s Association , which represents 45,000 dockworkers, had been negotiating throughout the summer, but talks broke down over issues including wages and automation. The strike could have a significant economic impact, with The Conference Board estimating a one-week strike could cost the U.S. $3.78 billion, affecting 57% of container volume. https://lnkd.in/gNesjH5m

Thousands of dock workers across central U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports, from Houston to Boston, have gone on strike, halting cargo movement and threatening supply chains, including Michigan's $65 billion export economy. The strike, which began after contract negotiations between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance stalled over wage increases and job protections from automation, could disrupt industries such as auto manufacturing and agriculture. Experts warn that a prolonged strike could lead to significant economic damage, with widespread supply chain disruptions affecting everything from auto parts to perishable goods. #SCLT4380, #PORT, #STRIKE https://lnkd.in/gSBRYVUY

Major port strike to shut down US trade by Tuesday… A major strike involving thousands of dockworkers at every significant East and Gulf coast port starts early next week, threatening half of all goods shipped in containers in and out of the US. The strike is the first of its kind in nearly 50 years and is the result of an ongoing dispute over pay and the use of automation equipment in the ports, threatening job security. Negotiations between the dockworkers’ union and a #shipping industry group representing terminal operators and ocean carriers have been stalled for months, with both sides unwilling to bargain. The United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) has filed an unfair labor practice with the National Labor Relations Board requesting "immediate injunctive relief,” requiring the union to resume talks to negotiate a deal. A shutdown will severely hamper the flow of goods and raise shipping costs. Any spike in expenses will be passed on to consumers just as US inflation normalizes. A total of 14 ports involving 25k workers could be affected by the strike including: Baltimore; Boston; Charleston, South Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida; Miami; Houston; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans; New York/New Jersey; Norfolk, Virginia; Philadelphia; Savannah, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; and Wilmington, Delaware. These ports handle more than 68% of all containerized #exports in the US and roughly 56% of containerized imports, meaning a short strike could cause significant disruptions, costing the economy as much as $5 billion a day. For every day of a port strike, it will take four to six days to catch up with the backlog in ships, and should a strike persist longer than a month, companies could face shortages of parts and other items. A one week strike could delay unloading by up to a month. Although alternative options include shipping through West coast ports, this is limited due to the volume those ports can handle. It is not known whether the US government will intervene to stop the strike at this stage. Happy Friday everyone... Around 45,000 members of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) along the East and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. are on the verge of a major strike. These workers are responsible for loading and unloading cargo at ports from Maine to Texas and the strike could halt operations at key ports, creating massive disruptions in the supply chain just as the holiday season approaches. The union, led by Harold Daggett, has been negotiating a new contract with the United States Maritime Alliance. The key issues in the negotiations include wage increases and resistance to port automation, which the union fears could replace human workers. This strike could have significant economic consequences, with potential costs of $5 billion per day, affecting the shipping of goods ranging from electronics to food products. Many companies are scrambling to move cargo before the ports shut down, but the disruption could still lead to delays and higher prices on consumer goods. #longshoremen #potentialstrike

US East Coast ports strike could impact Christmas 🎄🎅 With the potential US East Coast ports strike looming on October 1, the global logistics industry is facing significant challenges that could disrupt the holiday season. Major ports like New York, Savannah, and Philadelphia, which account for nearly 60% of US shipping traffic, are at risk of closure, potentially delaying critical shipments and impacting inventory levels for Christmas retail. The strike threatens to worsen existing supply chain issues, requiring retailers and logistics providers to scramble for alternatives to mitigate long-term disruptions. This strike could ripple through sectors dependent on timely imports, from consumer goods to manufacturing components, further complicating already strained supply chains. With the holiday season at stake, businesses will need proactive strategies to avoid costly delays and ensure goods are delivered on time.
