Fundraising ghosts of Christmas past… A donor couple wandered into our organization during the last week of the year. They’d never given to our organization before. But they wanted to make a “significant” gift before the end of the year. When we asked why, they explained that they initially wanted to give to another org, but there were no development staff available to meet with them on short notice. So they left and ended up in our office instead. The gift? A cool $1.2 MILLION Yes, time off during the holidays is important. So is having fundraisers available to meet with supporters (old and new) who want and need to give year-end donations. Especially those who need to give on short notice. What’s your 12/26 - 12/31 staffing plan look like this year?

I received over 100 spam calls in the last 24 hours - and it was a fundraising teaching moment. Yesterday, I was looking to get a quote to lay a new patio in our backyard. Since that online inquiry, I've gotten over 100 calls and they're still coming. On one hand, I was and remain very annoyed (the resurgence of spam calls drives everyone nuts). On the other hand, one of those companies who called back promptly will be getting my business. Here's my point: when I expressed interest, someone took notice. Question for you, fundraiser: when someone expresses interest in your mission, who takes notice? Does anybody? Too often, prospective donors are proverbially raising their hands through a small donation or volunteering or providing their feedback, as if to say, "I'm beginning to start to care about this mission and now I'm waiting for someone to talk to me". Too often, the nonprofit sector is the exact OPPOSITE of the annoying telemarketer. Instead of 100+ calls, it's silence. When a prospective donors shows interest, make sure someone takes notice. #Philanthropy #Fundraising #Propsects

It might be October, but year end giving is around the corner and it’s the perfect time for nonprofits to ramp up their fundraising efforts! One key strategy to finish strong is crafting a standout year-end appeal. Here are 5 ways to make your appeal stand out from the crowd: 1️⃣ Tell a Story: Share the amazing things your nonprofit has accomplished this year. Highlight how donations can help continue that momentum. 2️⃣ Focus on Impact: Show donors exactly how their contributions will make a difference. People want to see the tangible results of their generosity. 3️⃣ Personalize Your Message: Make your appeal feel special by addressing donors by name and referencing their past support. 4️⃣ Create a Sense of Urgency: Remind donors that year-end giving is a limited-time opportunity. Highlight any matching gift challenges to encourage immediate action. 5️⃣ Include a Clear Call to Action: Make it easy for donors to give with a prominent donation link or button in your appeal. 📌 When people give to make your organization’s mission possible, they don’t have to. It’s a choice! Donors make a choice to give. 👀 You’re not entitled — no matter how great your cause is — to receive someone’s money. It’s therefore incumbent upon effective fundraisers to learn how to communicate thanks as many times as possible. ✅ Consider the variety of ways that you currently say, “Thank you,” to donors. 🤔 Then brainstorm a few additional ways you can begin to let donors know their support is appreciated. ☀️ The summer months are typically a slower time for fundraising. Very little solicitation of support happens during this season because donors are often otherwise occupied and unresponsive. 💡 Why not use this time to thank donors for contributing to your programming’s impact? Annual donors who generally give during the year-end appeal will remember and maybe renew their support sooner. 😮 Even better, they may feel compelled to give again before December. 👨🏾💻 So, what is one added way you might express thanks to donors this summer? #thankyou #fundraising #nonprofitlife #donorrelations #annualgiving #EltonInTheAM

Every fundraiser's dream: an unsolicited gift lands in the bank account! What do you do next? ❓ First you need to work out where it came from. ☎ Then, pick up the phone and thank whoever gave it. But don't stop there - use that call as an opportunity to find out about your donor! - What motivated them to give? - What are they passionate about? - Tell them you'd love to keep them updated on the impact their gifts are having - can you get their email address so you can do that? - You have an upcoming event, and you'd love for them to join you so you can thank them in person. Make the most of these opportunities to learn about your supporters, and make them feel appreciated. #Fundraising #DonorStewardship

Eight days until Giving Tuesday emails start hitting your inbox. As a donor, are you ready? Here are a few tips to ensure your contributions have the greatest impact. 1️⃣ Identify what you care about: Get clear on your values, how you want to engage, and what you will prioritize this giving season. It will make saying yes even more worthwhile and meaningful. 2️⃣ Go bigger with smaller nonprofits: There are plenty of nonprofits to choose from, but smaller organizations are often overlooked. Support small local nonprofits that are poised to scale, but might not have the dollars to execute a splashy marketing campaign. 3️⃣ Consider a matching donation: Make your gift a matching donation, doubling the donations of other donors on Giving Tuesday. This helps the nonprofit diversify their support for long-term stability and doubles your impact. A win for you and for the nonprofit. #GivingTuesday #EffectivePhilanthropy
