When I was first diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in early-1993, when I was seventeen years old, I was told there wasn’t a cure or treatment, the vision loss would be slow, and that I should have useable sight into my sixties. It was suggested I take a high dose of vitamin A, in a formulation that wasn’t readily available, as this had been shown to potentially slow the rate of degeneration. It was also advised to get my liver levels checked every few months to ensure I didn’t experience hepatoxicity from the high vitamin A doses and permanently damage my liver. Over the next sixteen years, after dozens of tedious ophthalmological and retinal exams and taking the vitamin A, my sight gradually deteriorated  and there was little to no hope. From early-2007 thru late-2009, I experienced rapid losses of sight, leaving me with light perception only. To say this journey tested my spiritual, emotional, and psychological resolve is a gross understatement. The more I think about it, I’m truly blessed to still have healthy liver function because there were other folks who weren’t so fortunate after undergoing the vitamin A therapy (which has since been largely discredited as bogus). While I don’t like being blind and never will, I’ve learned to accept it as best I can. One of the most unpleasant aspects of this whole deal is the annual visit to the retinal specialist, where I get the numbing eyedrops and have to endure bright pen lights and scans while being asked to not blink or move…only to be told there still aren’t any effective treatments or meaningful breakthroughs. I always leave those appointments feeling sad, angry, foolish, despondent, and almost as powerless as when I was experiencing my vision loss. But for the first time ever, after reading the results of this biotech company’s Phase 2B clinical trial forwarded to me by a friend and colleague earlier today, I’m honestly feeling hopeful about the possibility of my vision one day being restored. Nanoscope Therapeutics Announces Positive Top-line Results from Randomized Controlled Trial of MCO-010 for Retinitis Pigmentosa (prnewswire.com)   As an addendum, maybe I’m not wild about the prospect of seeing the additional lines on my face or the degree to which my waistline has grown.  But I’d love nothing more than to see the faces of my wife and kids for the first time…followed by a trip to the ocean, an art gallery, and to a place where the grass is greener, the skies are bluer, the sunsets are more soothing, the stars are brighter, and the mountains are more breathtaking than I ever remember them to be.
