Thermal Mass Flow metering Thermal flow meters rely on various techniques to measure the cooling effect of flowing gas on a heated element. In a hot-film anemometer with constant temperature difference control, a fine platinum wire is heated to a specific temperature above that of an unheated reference sensor placed within the gas stream. The amount of electrical power needed to maintain this temperature difference is directly related to the gas flow rate and its properties. If the gas composition is known and constant, the mass flow rate can be electronically calculated based on the pre-determined relationship between heater current and mass flow, eliminating the need for additional pressure and temperature corrections.
