On Thursday, May 16, I will have the pleasure of speaking alongside Jérôme Mora (Safran) Julie Mougin (CEA) and Guillaume Malet (Turbotech Aero) at Paris-Saclay Innovation Playground #SPRING event on the deployment of low-carbon #hydrogen over the next few years. Essential to the ecological transition, an issue of energy and industrial sovereignty or an alternative to carbon-based energies, hydrogen raises many questions and feeds all hopes. Located at the intersection between research and industry, hydrogen has both many benefits and major challenges to ensure efficient and safe use by industry. What are the most relevant uses for low-carbon hydrogen? Why is it important to measure the impact of #GHG emissions from #hydrogen production methods? What technologies are available? At #EDFLab we have developed an electrolyser testing platform connected to an experimental electricity network. We verify the performance of the available technologies in support of EDF group projects. We also help electrolyser manufacturers in testing and improvîng their products. Meet us in Vancouver next week, where researchers from our Clean Energy Innovation Research Centre (CEI) will chair 4 sessions on Hydrogen clean energy production at the Hy-fcell Canada 2024! CEI Hydrogen program advisor Francois Girard, will chair a session on June 18 entitled “H2 Production: Alternative Pathways: Looking at emerging approaches for clean hydrogen”. On June 19, researcher Wei Qu will chair the ‘Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis’ session at which a team of NRC researchers (including Peter Mardle), Simon Fraser University, the University of Alberta and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft will present their technical activities and progress in advancing AEM hydrogen production technology toward commercialization. Next, researcher Ryan Baker will lead a panel session on “Increasing Cost-Effectiveness of H2 Tech”. The Hydrogen and Climate Partnership (H2CliP) is a Canada-Germany 3+2 collaboration to estimate the potential for green hydrogen in both countries and for trade between them. Canadian and German experts from industry, government and academia will provide an overview of H2CliP and its progress. Finally, researcher Manuel Hernandez will chair a session on “Advancements in Safety & Regulations: managing hydrogen safety, from research and risk analysis to best practices and standards”, at which Cyrille Decèse-Petit (Cyrille D.) will present. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a new funding opportunity of up to $46 million to accelerate the research, development, and demonstration of clean hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. This initiative, part of the Biden-Harris administration’s effort to advance clean energy, will focus on improving hydrogen production, infrastructure, and fuel cell applications, particularly in sectors like heavy-duty transportation and industrial processes. Key areas include scaling up photoelectrochemical water splitting, developing high-performance materials for hydrogen storage, advancing fuel cell components for heavy-duty vehicles, and demonstrating hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. This funding supports DOE’s broader goals of decarbonization and building a sustainable, resilient economy. Hydrogen, long touted as a future fuel, is finally stepping into the spotlight thanks to a major new initiative led by former Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. Funded by the DOE, the Hydrogen Demand Initiative (H2DI) aims to build a market for "clean" hydrogen, focusing on industrial and transportation uses. This includes powering heavy industries, long-haul trucking with fuel cells, and even ship propulsion with hydrogen-derived ammonia. The initiative tackles a key hurdle for hydrogen adoption: the lack of a structured market. H2DI will leverage expertise from S&P Global, the Intercontinental Exchange, Dentons, and MIT to create a system for trading and using clean hydrogen produced at seven designated hubs across the US. This push comes as the US aims for net-zero emissions by 2050. By capturing and storing carbon during production, H2DI defines "clean" hydrogen broadly, encompassing both electrolysis using renewable energy and reformed natural gas with carbon capture. This comprehensive program has not only enriched my understanding of hydrogen but has also underscored its pivotal role as a cornerstone in the future of energy. Hydrogen, hailed as the 'fuel of the future,' stands poised to revolutionize the energy landscape by offering a clean, versatile, and sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuels. As the global community strives towards achieving net zero emissions, hydrogen emerges as a front runner in this transition, offering a pathway to decarbonize various sectors such as transportation, industry, and power generation.
