It can sometimes be challenging to rank high in search engine results, especially with the Google algorithm’s strict quality standards. Marketers used to be able to choose a focus keyword and use it multiple times to rank for that term. But Google began cracking down on how often a marketer can use a term before it crosses the line into keyword stuffing, and Google penalized it. One strategy we recommend using is keyword variations. These allow you to repeatedly discuss the focus keyword without using the exact match keyword. It helps you rank for the keyword and avoids Google penalties. Keyword variations can take two forms: synonyms and semantic variations. Synonyms are keywords with the exact meaning of your focus keyword. For example, for a post about content strategy, you can also say “content plans” and “strategies for your content.” Semantic variations are terms related to your keyword and help provide context. For instance, if you are talking about content strategy, you might also talk about research, content marketing, and content management. They aren’t the same thing as a strategy, but they are related and help Google identify the context of your focus keyword. A natural sprinkling of both variations throughout your content will help you rank higher in more relevant searches. Need help identifying synonyms and semantic variations?
