Fraunhofer IWS tackles resource scarcity. The global scarcity of critical #RawMaterials – like lithium, cobalt, and even aluminum – is a pressing challenge for industries worldwide. Rising prices, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions have underscored the urgent need for innovative solutions. Prof. Martina Zimmermann and her team play a pivotal role in the Fraunhofer-Leitprojekt ORCHESTER, a Fraunhofer flagship initiative focused on ensuring a resilient and sustainable supply of #Materials. By combining cutting-edge simulations with advanced experimental methods, they aim to: ✅ Optimize the use of secondary raw materials (recycled materials) ✅ Mitigate challenges such as contamination and batch variability in recycling ✅ Develop alternatives to conventional materials that are more sustainable and resource-efficient ✅ Accelerate the development of high-performance materials like high-entropy alloys (HEAs) With a combinatorial materials design approach, our experts leveraging digital ecosystems to efficiently explore material compositions and predict their properties 🔬. These breakthroughs promise to empower industries with adaptive strategies for addressing material shortages – critical for achieving energy transition goals. 👉🏼 Learn more about this groundbreaking work here: https://lnkd.in/gGggefQc Together, through innovation and collaboration, we can harmonize material science with sustainable industry practices. 🎵 #LightAtWork #MaterialsScience #Sustainability Copyright image: © Martin Förster/SAXONIA Werbeagentur/Fraunhofer IWS
I appreciate the will to develop HEA's quickly, but most of them consist of exactly the elements that are critical like Mo, Ni, Co etc. Ideally we develop new materials that consist of non-critical elements!

1moWhile we are exposed to many global developments without any direct influence of our own and one might well be inclined to face this situation with fatalism, I am deeply convinced that science in general, and material science in particular, is the central game changer here ... and it inspires me every day anew to be able to contribute a small piece of the puzzle with my team.
