A client once hopped on a call with me instantly just because of this ONE question. “What is the target audience for the software that you intend to get develop?” Why did this question intrigue him? He had been hiring independent contractors for quite some time. This meant he was frequently conversing with developers. However, it was new for him to see that a developer would be keen enough to care who the product was being built for. Developers are often only interested in knowing: - Requirements of a project - Key features requested by the client But asking insightful questions like: - What is the target audience this tool is being built for. - What benefit would user get through this particular feature is also very important. These questions give us (developers) an idea of whether an intended product caters to user’s expectations or not. At the same time, they make you stand out to your client/employer The bottom line here? The aspect of empathy does not become any less important simply because you are a technical person. Even in situations where you are just expected to “deliver what you are asked”, maybe go an extra mile and ask questions that the founder/client might have not thought about. P.S. 6moActually yes, that has happened with me I was in a call with one of our clients and I learned that their demographics mainly consisted of old people and from there onwards, I tried making sure that the sections and features we build are super simple and straightforward since that was very important for them
